    Hi,
I have a 1981 XJ500 (serial number 5N4-000486) and cannot find any information online about the front brake calipers. I need to replace the brake seals and possibly the pistons.
If you have the parts manual for this model please let me know what the original part numbers are for the dust and brake seals and the piston.

Alternatively, does anyone know if the calipers are the same as those used on the XJ550?

    Thanks!

Obviously, you're not in the USA. Where are you; what "market" is the bike?

Is it a 4-cylinder XJ, and styled like the 550 Secas (or even like the 550 Maxim?) If so, then it's a good possibility.

Do your brake calipers look like this? These are all XJ550:

There are pictures of one on Bikepics (owner is in Austria). Looks similar to a Maxim 550, but with dual rotors. Seems like European models of a lot of the early '80's XJ's had dual rotors where the US ones had a single front disc.

On the other hand, Bikepics also shows an '82 XJ500 in the US - with a single front disc.

BINGO! Unfortunately, the one REALLY GOOD pic of the caliper is blurred, but from looking at the other pics where you can "kind of" see the caliper, they sure look the same.

I'm betting they're the same. Can you get some part numbers from a Yamaha dealer where you are and we can compare them to the numbers from the USA fiche: http://www.yamahapartshouse.net/pages/O ... ibrand=YAM If so, then XJ4Ever is your man.

Do you have any pics of this XJ500?

Hi and thanks for all the responses.

I live in Sweden and the bike was sold here originally, but the local dealers don't have a microfiche covering this bike.
A picture of it is appended and also a close-up of the caliper.
As my caliper looks identical to the XJ550 shown in bigfitz 52 post I'll go for that - all the XJ550 seem to use the same size piston even if there are external difference between the caliper. So that will be a 4L0-W0047-01 then.

    Ride safe,
    Barry

4LO is a RD350LC part number but I think they're the same caliper, they take the same brake pad anyway

Yep and it's the same calipers as the 550s here.

Those also look suspiciously like 650 Seca style mufflers on a 550 Seca style bike... hmm... more Yamaha "parts room engineering?"
