    Hello all,

First post so be gentle. I searched all over the place and I can't seem to find my answer.

I am the proud owner of a 83 XJ550 Maxim. I bought the bike on the cheap and I was wanting to do a cafe conversion on it. After attempting several different tank solutions(other Yams and makes) unsuccessfully, I finally found a XJ550 Seca tank in great condition. I jumped on the offer as these are hard to find in my area. Turns out, I get the tank home, and it doesn't fit on the bike. The front loops will not go on the frame with the rubbers attached and the tail mount doesn't match up either (about an inch past the stock tank mount). Everything that I've read says that this should be a direct swap including the XJ4EVER guide (http://xj4ever.com/catalog/c-fuel.html). Am I doing something wrong here, or did I pick up a tank for another bike? Any answers would be greatly appreciated.

welcome to the forum, your images didn't come through. it is possible you did not get a xj550 seca tank. they are more rare than hens teeth.

The tank of the 550 seca is a different size compared to the 55 maxim. I am restoring a 550 seca and I am searching a tank for it. If you have no use for that tank I may, if you are selling it in search for something that is an easy swap please PM me.

    That's unfortunate.

Are there any tanks out there that are a direct fit. I was told that the Seca was, so that's why I picked one up. If there aren't I may have to modify it to fit. It doesn't look too difficult to make it work.

Howdy. The format of the forum might be throwing me off a bit, or this might just be an old thread. The SECCA tank does indeed fit the maxim frame. But there are modifications that are needed. The front rubber mounts on the frame do fit in between the tank mounts, but the fitment is fairly tight. As for the rear mount. You will actually need to cut it off of the frame, and slide it back about an inch(going off of memory so that's a rough measurement. Suffice it to say at that point you will no longer have the mounting bolt location for the stock airbox, and your factory seat will not fit. But if you are going for a caffee build, you probably don't are about those details anyway. I haven't been on here in a while (had another profile but couldn't remember my log in), but ill try to add some pictures of my build when I get a chance.

This is indeed an old thread. Hogfiddles has a tank-swap info thread pinned in the modifications section.
    Welcome back :)

    Whoooooo resurrection lol.

Yes, I modified my frame to make it fit. I'm also well beyond most of those things. About the only thing left stock on my bike is the rear wheel.
