what is the reason you need your vin converted? If it is to get it on the road then you can call the insurance company and give them the vin they will be able to enter it on their and then just fill out the forms at your local DMV and you should be good to go. I just had to do this to my 82 maxim. but the next day it caught on fire. lol

The correct VIN is the number stamped on the steering head, it does not matter if it is 9 or 17 digits. You don't want to end up with a different number on the title. Some bikes did have a 9 digit VIN number in 1981. The autos went to a 17 digit # in 1980, it took a few more years for bikes to catch up.

might depend on where you are, but the 9 digit is the actual legal vin that all records should be found under.

Not necessarily. His bike has a high enough serial # that it could put it into early 1981 build time, which Yamaha would have still been using the shorty VIN on the steering neck.

    However

The new VIN system was still being implemented well into 1981. My 650 was built in 10/81, but still was stickered and titled with the 17 digit VIN, while the shorty VIN was stamped into the neck.

Just because that sticker is missing 32 years later, we can't assume that it was always registered with the shorty VIN.

The best thing to do in this case is to have the PD run both shorty and full VINs.

    The maths are correct, btw.

That depends on what the PD tells you. Whichever VIN they have a record for will be the one you need to use to file for title.

Could you help me figure out my vin? I'm having the same issue. My shorty vin is 5N8-028105. Its a 1981 xj650 maxim. The sticker on the other side is the 17 digit vin but is too faded to read.
