So I have been thinking I would like to add my own personal design on the timing covers, but there is the "Yamaha YICS" Stamped right in the middle of it. I was told that I could probably fill the stamp by using JB Weld then sanding it down. I will be painting it flat black and airbrushing a design on it using high heat paint.

Any other suggestions that would be easier and or better?
Do they make just plain blank covers for these that fit?

    Thanks in advance!

Heat the area up and the "stamp/badge" should peel right out. If you don't damage them I will be willing to buy them from you, at a fair price of course in lieu of the hopefully good advice. :)

    SERIOUSLY.

They're not stamped in there; they're "badges" held in with double-sided foam sticky tape.

Shoot a little WD40 (here's one thing it's actually good for) in around the edges and give it a day or two. Should peel right out.

Razz, you do know Len has real replacements (not just stickers) now, don't you?

The 82 650 Seca has covers that are polished aluminum in the middle, black around the edges, no writing (not even Yamaha). They'd make a good base if you wanted to do something creative with them. I'm pretty sure they'd fit any XJ.

If you are looking for smooth covers. The '80 XJ650, and the FJ600 covers are interchangable.

Fitz, Yes I know the yics are peel off decals but there is still a huge stamp in there when you pull them out. And Yamaha is stamped in.
I will check online for some side covers from the other bikes mentioned. Thanks for the info!!

My xj 650 yics had a right hand cover fitted upside down onto the left side when I bought it. It was badly scratched and gouged so I decided I had nothing to lose by using my power file to take the metal right back until it was smooth. I made a few measurements and determined that there was sufficient material to maintain integrity after the 'Yamaha' and 'YICS' recesses were dressed back. Sure enough it worked. I now have a plain but thinner cover for the left hand side.

I also just bought a 82 XJ650 YICS and it also had the cover upside down when I bought it... why is that? So does this make our bikes worth more... like a error on a baseball card.. jk I am powdercoating my entire bike ... chopped the rear off today to weld in my new rigid frame I made. I may buy the 80 XJ650 cover as it is smooth.

Just so you guys who have upside down covers are aware.....there is a little slot at the bottom of the cover to allow for drainage if anything gets under the cover. If you have one on upside down, the drain is now a funnel instead.....funneling rain, dirt, etc... right to the INSIDE of the cover....
