Front brake Caliper/brake rebuild

    Hi all,
    Been a while!

    I know there has been a lot of discussion regarding rebuilding the front caliper and it has been useful. But my piston was stuck... Grease didn't work, 150lb compressed air didn't work!!!

    Pipe wrench did!!! :-(

    Can anyone tell me if this will fit my North American 1982 Seca XJ550R?
    (I think it's an R...)

    Is there a serial number I can look up to confirm?

    Yes, it will fit fine. Why not buy closer to home? The Yam RD250LC and RD350LC also use the same pistons if it helps to widen your search :)

    Great bike colours BTW, was that a genuine colour scheme in the US/Canada?
    It looks a lot like our UK rd2/350lc colours. Heres mine:

    They listed the measurements in the ad (1 x piston type A : diameter 38 mm and length 36.2 mm). Just measure the one you removed.

    It was indeed a "genuine" color scheme here in the States, but for the 1983 model year. (There were NO XJ550Rs actually manufactured in '83, so it's an easy mis-identification to make. The '83 model year bikes were all built in mid-late '82.) Here's mine:

    It is indeed lovely... Mine is labelled 1982 though.

    And the piston worked great! Brakes are good... bleeding them was a pain in the butt though.

    Tried reverse bleeding, sringe bleeding... nothing worked except for engaging the brake lever, opening/closing the fluid res. cover, releasing lever and repeat 25 times....

    It would have been. The manufacturing date goes on the frame label. The manufacturing date isn't always the same as the model year (my '75 Toyota Celica was built in late '74, while a friend's was made in mid '75). The year on the title can be either one, depending on what state it was regestered in, or neither date if it sat unsold for a year or more. Aren't motorcycles interesting?

    Yeah... Good point.

    By making that mistake I got the "old bike" insurance rate 1 year earlier. lol
    Mine in about 2002... and needs some luvin' now.

    Vacuum bleeding was a no-go? That's surprising, although you need to leave the reservoir cover off when you do it.

    Yeah. Surprised me too.
    The cover was off.... Must have been an air lock someplace.
    It's gone a little soft again so I'll bleed it over the winter.

    Sure would like to make this old girl pristine again. Either that or do some custom bits.
    It runs like a champ.
