1986 xj900 cafe build

Hey guys
Got this xj from the wreckers few months back. Got her running and registered last week then started tearing it apart! Doing a cafe build.
I got a hold of a xjr1300 tank to put on it.
Next to come is the seat, I'm going to use black hdpe plastic for the seat pan.
The tab on the back of the xjr tank needed to be bent up to get the right angle to use the existing tank mount.
The existing tank mount was cut carefully out, lowered and taken back about 50mm .

 

Thought this view of the two tanks would be usefull to someone as I was looking for it when buying the xjr1300 tank

 

Got the tank front mounts finished, I cut off the original mounts and reused them. I also cut a bracket (I think I took it off top of air box) in half and welded this to the frame and then the original tank mounts welded to that! Major fluke but there was no extra work needed, very easy but took a while to get position right.

 

That is good looking with that tank do like can not wait ro see end result

 

I love this tank! I almost went with it on mine, but decided on the '77 XS750 tank. Good luck on your project.

 

Getting stuff done

So I have made a seat pan using hdpe plastic, it's easy to use but not so easy to glue. I put a pic up of the right glue to use. I also made a rear tail light and number plate bracket and also a box for the battery and all the wiring. I have cut down the triple tree and drilled some holes for led pilot lights for indicators.

Now it's time to rip it all completely apart, get everything painted or upholstered, rebuild carbs and top end of engine

Have had the frame and tank painted and have apoulstered the seat

 

Have also stripped the calipers and put new seals and some new pistons in and re sprayed the calipers aswell as the head set

 

Lookin' good, like the color.

Hey I see this thread is quite old and no end result.
I am an Aussie, now living in Switzerland and I have just started a project very similar to yours. (base bike 1984-5 XJ900)

I have been eyeing off the XJR1300 tank as a replacement.
Any more detail about the tank you used, year model, etc..
Any advice for someone following you down this road?
