hey there guys its been a while since I don't post anything. I had been having issues with my bike since I got it 1982 xj750 and with the help of you guys I was able to find @razz1969. he has been my go to xj guru here in Houston. I took the bike to him for some engine work and with his vision I was convinced that @razz1969 had some great ideas and we are going for them... we are doing customization on that bike I cant wait to see the final product!!! he really has a great understanding on these bike and me being a youngster (25) I have learned a lot from him I just want to give kudos to him and all other people on here that are always happy to lend a hand. we got new clip on handle bars, new speed-o getting rid of the Atari box finally!! new clutch and brake levers a different paint job... I was worried more about looks than mechanical and @razz1969 kept me in check with fixing the mechanical first forks and seals valve shims spark plug boots... its been a long process and @razz1969 has been great I recommend him to anyone around our area... it's not a good idea to have all that weight hanging on the ignition either. over time the ign key and cylinder will wear out prematurely. I only use the ign key in all of my vehicles. the rest go in my pocket.

Man... talk about blown away. Thanks superman. I do it for the love of the bike, not for the love of money. So any how here is a little teaser. Keep in mind I am not finished with the tank, got to do a couple more coats. I am all most at the point of putting parts back on instead of off. 20150128_222218.jpg

Lookin good! Interesting to me that your stock tank has the indented badge mounts where the yamaha emblem screws in. My Yamaha badges simply stuck on.

Also, could you post a link/details to your brake/clutch levers? I can't seem to find any like that with a 16mm piston.

    Thanks!

Thanks for the link. That's ok, there's still time before I can ride. I just need to know if they'll actually work with these brakes. I don't want them to be too firm or loose which is why I want to stay with a stock piston diameter size. Hopefully @razz1969 can chime in. Unfortunately none of those Asian sellers ever advertise the actual piston diameter (The Xj750 dual disk is a 16mm) and so I never know what I'm buying.

Oh yes, and what is the final color going to be? Looks to be a rough base coat, what are you using to smooth it prior to final coat?

I might be able to help with the carbs as well. We just moved into the "Golden Triangle" area a couple months ago.

There are a couple bike salvage yards on the East side of H-town, one has a few XJ's but needless to say they are in rough shape.
I have a carb rack, all the tools and all the know-how to tune them, I just don't have the time. And after carbs, the bike needs tires, brakes, and I need to clean & seal the tank. I am not going to work about paint right now. It'll happen, I just need the time off of work to do it.

There are two tanks for the Maxim. The tank for the 750 is larger (wider) than for the 650. It looks to me like he has a 650 Maxim tank, which does use bolted on emblems.

Just find the logo of an existing MC club that you like the look of, and use that but with your own rocker panel beneath it. Easy and quick, nothing to worry about. If you want to spend the money, get it really big and wear it on your back.

The 750 Maxim tank is about 5 gallons. The 650 Maxim tank is roughly 3.6 gallons. I am running a 750 tank on my 650. Before the pods, I was able to get 220-ish miles per tank.

Watch tthe driveshaft angle. The U-Joint can only go so-far and remain intact under load.

I am not modifying the rear suspension. Just haven't atached the shocks yet. We are talking about the tank and seat combo, although this is a very rough mock up.

I agree in its currant state. The grab bar will go and the side panel would be changed to make it flow. Along with the new clip ons, controls, and speedo i think its what we are looking for, the street fighter look. Remember this is just a ruff placing the parts in the approximately place trying to get a vision mock up. Now I wouldn't do this to a factory correct bike. To begin with this bike didn't have the factory tank, handle bars, side cover, and the gauge clusters had some serious faults. Therefore this bike is a great candidate for this kind of modification. Superman posted this to see if any one can see where we can go with this and try to get some positive response or constructive criticism that this site is famous for.

Like @razz1969 said its a rough mock up... and @razz1969 is right my bike was rough nothing really original about it like tank, bars, etc... and i know if my bike had more original parts on it @razz1969 probably would not help me do any mods and would have rather conserve the originality of the xj and i would follow his know best advice but since it wasnt in any way original we want your thoughts on how we can accomplish this

Looks to me like the bars are going to hit the tank no matter how it gets fitted. If that's not the case, it could be cool.
