    Hi all

Did this ever happen ? During removal of an old exhaust gasket (1988 model bike) this weekend I pulled a couple right apart without thinking and the fluffy stuff came out with my thin nosed pliers. Is this likely to be asbestos ?

even if it wasn't, just wet it, wrap it in plastic and toss it away. or wet it and put it back in the ground where it came from.

Yeah, more or less my plan. I guess it could be fibre glass in there, trouble is no-one seems to know much about this..

Hi - it's only an opinion but by the 80's the dangers of asbestos were well known so I would think it unlikely. The two worst types of asbestos (Blue and brown) were banned in Europe by then with white being phased out in the 90's. Normally, the level of exposure is a factor, which is why people who worked in the building trade or industries which used asbestos have suffered so much.

I guess you should treat it as if it COULD be then you wil be ok.

I knew I wasn't the only one. We also handled cat carcasses in biology without gloves or masks. Man, I still gag at the smell of formaldehyde.

Nothing that exotic, I was a suburban kid. I was lucky to get lead paint on the baseboards in my house.

i've still got a piece of woven cloth about 12 X 18. use it when soldering close to wood walls. Use your head, be safe and don't burn your house down.

Dave, he said cats, not cars. Were you sniffing the formaldehyde in biology?

do you soak it with water when you use it?

when I was younger, I apprenticed with a jeweler that worked out of his basement in west seattle. the house he owned had asbestos pipe insulation on the pipes in the basement where his studio was. we both had altoids tins with some of the insulation from the pipes in them. we kept them wet and buried the gemstones in rings under it when resizing them.
