How rare, or common, are XJ's?

Anyone have a production breakdown for all the years and variants of the XJ's?

I could NOT hazard a guess.

Certain models might be rare but I dont think xj's in general are that hard to find. A quick auto trader search shows me 8 xj maxims for sale in southern Ontario alone.

I don't know the production years or all the model types

Just this riding season alone, I have seen several in the northeast part of Indiana. There were two in the past month that were on craigslist. If I had the money, I would own them right now.

I see them all the time. Yamaha must have sold lots of them.

The XJ family of motorcycles are still in production. The XJR1300 and XJ6 Diversion being the most recent variants (and still unavaliable in the U.S. ).

    Talking USA-North American market only:

"Rarest" would have to be the '83 XJ900RK. Or maybe the Canadian-spec 650 Secas with YICS motors.

"Next rarest" is probably the Seca 550. Even though it was a 3-year bike, and one would think the one-year 650 Seca would be more rare. But they brought so many of those here, I think the total probably surpassed all 3 years' 550 Secas. So second place might actually be a tie between any 550 Seca and the '82 XJ650RJ.

LEAST rare is any variant of the 650 Maxim, they sold a gazillion of them. Back in their day, every other bike on the road was a 650 Max. They WERE the prototypical "UJM."

Amen. This is an '05, the last year for twin mufflers. I gotta have symmetry. At least I can have the same turn signals. <Rude ethnic slur deleted.> Is there no "drool" emoticon?

And I still have the earliest one known .... :)

    -Obviously, first month of production
-Most Likely first week of production
-I like to think very possibly first day of production

If anyone can get the serial number, I'd like to get it logged onto the XJ900rk Seca Database.....

PM me with the info, don't broadcast it through a forum post.

XJ400 was basically a Japan-only bike though a few have made it to the USA.

You need to be careful with names and numbers when talking about 400's----
    There are the following:

XJ400 Maxim - inline 4 cyl, Japan market

XS400 Maxim - 2 cyl twin that has the tank and styling like the XJ series, not to common

XS400 Special - 2 cyl twin that has the tank and styling of the XS series, a gazillion of them

XS400r Seca - 2 cyl twin but with sporty look sort of like the xz550 Vision , not common..... I have one, a guy at work has one ( I may buy it from him), I know of two others around here.... A few listmembers have one

There were variations within lines, like XS400 Special II, Heritage Special, etc.....

Oddly, my first bike was a 400 Special--loved that thing. Now I've come full circle, back to Yamaha. :)

I have read that the 85-86 maxim xj700x and especially the xj750x are rare cause not many made it to America but I don't know how it compares to other bikes

Ironically, there were more X's made than airheads (iirc), but so many people either blew them up or wrecked them cuz they didn't know how to either respect ,or simply Handle, what they had and many went to the great scrapyard in the sky. Therefore, there's less of them around now... And the lower production airheads just keep hanging and now outnumber the X.... Kind of an amusing turn-around between the airhead and the X..
    So

if you have an X, you have one the ones that survived

If you have an airhead, you have one of the lesser production

Either way, you one of the relatively more rare xj's.

What about the 1983 XJ650 LK Turbo (1500)? I've got one of the more common '82s (6000) :)

I know there's a smaller amount of them, but no clue as far as actual production. They MUST be rare---- I only have 1 of those...lol. Thinking about it, mine might be an 82.....

The more I read, the more I see year confusion with these things. I wonder how common that is. In another thread, someone thought they had been working on one year and it turned out another. It actually happens all the time at AutoZone, where someone drives a '95 but they have a '94 or a '96 engine, for instance. Weird things.

how rare are xj's? I went to a motorcycle show in Portland last month where there was easily more than a couple hundred bikes, and I was the only one there that had a xj.

They seem to be plentiful here in socal, but I'm not entirely sure. A buddy just got a 550 Maxim for a bobber project and I see em on craigslist all the time.

I go to the Muskegon Bike Time here in Michigan every year (here's a clip of a "quick" ride through

Don't think I've ever seen more than one or two XJs there...
    There's a butt-ton of look-alike hds though :p lol

How about the customer that comes in and wants a carburetor re build kit, you ask him year make and model. He replies "I don't know". REALLY, if you don't know the year make or model, maybe you shouldn't take on some thing as complex as a carburetor. And just to think these guys are driving there cars that they work on, on the same road we are driving on.

Better yet, the guy who thinks he has one engine but I happen to know for a fact he doesn't. usually they aren't hard to talk out of their thinking but sometimes, they are stubborn and just can't be helped lol.

I had a guy argue with me and then stormed off because he was sure he had a 24 volt electrical system. His reason? It said 24v right on top of the engine. I don't know nothing about cars.

If an XJ900rk was located, what kind of price could they command for a good condition bike (being rare and all)?

XJ's are very common. I have about 24 of them right here. The 900rk? I have almost 4% of the current registry right here....They're all over the place. (WELL, the registry has about 70 or so on it, and I have 5 of them) and another one is about an hour away.

    Ok.....enough silly-but-true blather....

I know quite a few sales that were in the $1200-$1900 range for 900rk's in nice condition. I know of 1 that was in VERY nice condition though not as nice as mine, and it sold for $3500. I would be hard-pressed to sell mine for that.....it may be tempting, but I would still be hardpressed at a higher offer because of the condition and extremely low unit number.

Why don't you start a 'conversation' with me, give me more specifics on the one you're looking at....or what you're looking for, and I'll see what I can suggest for you.
