New to motorcycles and embarrassed to ask, but how do I remove my seat? The bike is a 81 xj550 maxim. Maybe a pic or 2? Thank you!

I'm new too. Don't be embarrassed. We're all here to learn, or to help those who need to learn. Don't know if your bike is the same as mine, but on mine, you undo the seat lock and latch to open it, and then there are two hinges across the bike from where the lock is. Remove the hardware holding the hinges on to the seat, and voila! The seat is off. Sorry, no pictures, still learning the inter-web too! Welcome to the group, you'll find TONS of info here, and a helpful gang!

You have to open the little compartment beneath the back end of the seat, inside there are two rubber straps. Pull them loose from the hooks on the bottom of the saddle and lift up and back.

Yeah, I figures there'd be a difference. Plus I forgot about the little strut that holds it open. Is that what the straps are for on the 550, or are they on the 750s as well? Maybe mine got lost somewhere along the years.

The 750 has no rubber straps for the seat.

Does anyone know if a maxim 650 seat would latch onto a 550? I have a 1981 maxim 550. Hate the seat. Just curious about the 650 seat.
