So folks, I have an 81 Xj650H that is, what I call, my bobber/rat bike project. I have a "bus" style taillight I am putting on, problem is I am not the best with electrical. Please take a look at the upload. If I wire the blue harness wire to the red taillight wire, the taillight comes on. If I attaché the black wire form the taillight to the blue harness wire, the brake light comes on.

What needs to go where so the taillight is on at all tiem when the bike is running, and allows the brake light to work properly?? I cant read the wiring diagram in my manual to save my life. Mechanics are ok, electrical is a foreign language.

I pushed the brown and black harness wires to the side because they originaly lead to the turn signals, maybe I shouldn't be writing them off...?

    Thanks for the help.

Both of the black wires coming from the bike harness are ground wires. Then the blue wire is the running light; the yellow wire is the brake light.
If your chosen tail light only has the red and black wires coming from it, then it's a signal light only -- you can hook up as running light, or brake light, but not both. OK with a caveat - you could make it both, but you'd need a diode assembly to stop the two signal wires from grounding out to each other.
As for the signal wires - the turn signals use the frame itself as their grounding, so don't have a black wire. Then the Green should be the left signal, Brown/Tan should be the right.

Does your light have two bulbs or one?
