image.jpg What's going on guys, ivana here, these forums have been my home for the past few week as I can't stop reading all the informative material. Finally got my first day of work on the bike I'll post pics from where it began to where I ended off.

Ps: my bike is a 1983 yamaha xj Maxim 650

Started by taking off the wind screen and back seat rest and carry bag.

Sanded down the entire exhaust system and decreased it heavily.

3 coats flat, 2 coats semi
Gloss high tempt paint I'll include pics below.

Sanded and degreased the front bottom forks, ready to be painted tomorrow after some more taping.

Removed the fender and had a slip up... 4th screw snapped half in half out...after running to get a bolt extractor to no avail..I decided to give it another shot tomorrow, was far to windy out at this point.

Covered her up can't wait to continue tomorrow!

Hope to become friends and maybe meet some of you someday! Thanks in advance !

You are gonna have problems with the exhaust it is gonna chip off the chrome. The only way you can get it to stick halfway decent is to pull the pipes and sand the heck out of them no shiny spots at all. When it does start chipping get you some Emory paper wrap it around the tube and sand it or sand blast them. I am surprised yo did not get over spray on the tank and all other parts. If black is the look your going for if your just trying to cover up the clear coat and corrosion forks and cases are very east to strip and polish

Are you planning to put the front fender back on? If not, you may want to consider removing the fork brace that's underneath. It acts as a support and without it, your handling will be affected...
Welcome to the group. Can't wait to see more of your bike. If you are interested in meeting some of the members, you may want to check out the Central New York Carb Clinic. I think its mid June in Utica. Hosted by member Hogfiddles. Start a conversation with him for more info. Here's a link:

not trying to hijack a thread but just curious about what MattiThundrr just said, im contemplating not wearing my front fender, what fork brace are you talking about and why would you remove it if acts as support?

Maybe this is just for Secas or 750s, but there is a support under the fender... holds it in place. It also acts as a brace for the forks, giving a lot of support. If the brace is not replaced, you will get the wobbles. I THINK it's the same for the smaller bikes, but I'm not 100% sure

if you look on the underside of the fender where the bolts are it should be double thickness there, that is the fork brace. it's not much but it is strong. you might not have any problems without it but don't throw it away yet.
i kind of think all models will have it or the fenders would crack from vibration
