There's an empty spot in my heart and in my garage. To clear out space and prepare for an upcoming move, I had to pack up the XJ in a van and ship it off to my brother's garage. I know it's only minutes away, but it's still gone... Sigh.
    Sad Matti.

PS it fell over in the back of the van.

"Sure the centre stand will be fine, it's a short trip across town. Ratchet straps are for wimps."
    Crash. bang.
"Uh oh. Is the mirror supposed to point in that direction?"
Guhh. One more thing on the list.

A lesson learned the rough way... there are no shortcuts. Take the necessary steps to get the proper results. I wanted round mirrors, or ones like on the xj700 anyways, so now I have an excuse... gotta see the bright side. Just hadn't planned to do it so soon.

I know the feeling--- the front steering on my tractor (1946 Allis Chalmers WC) has been wearing out, and have a parts tractor that I've been keeping for ITS good steering housing-- figuring to swap when needed. WEEEELLLL-- after it somehow vibrated out of the spot where I parked it Friday evening ---- and it turned a sharp left.......then Rolled straight down the lawn......ran over an apple tree sapling---- then suddenly stopped rolling as the front tires forked a peach tree, causing the steering casing to shatter .........

I got the chance to start swapping housings yesterday, after using my truck and my nephew's rock-climbing jeep/winch to extract the tractor-- was able to limp it to the bottom of the driveway . Few more days of heavy lifting and it'll be good as old.

well, where I park it to shut it down there are a couple good depressions in the ground for each of the back tires as well as the dips for the front, too. I also have the front turned a bit up hill, so each tire is in its own "chock", and the front "chock" is angle a bit up hill so it "CAN'T" roll up hill. I put that in quotations because somehow friday night it did.

The amazing thing is that it did it quietly, and that it rolled perfectly straight down into the peach tree and caught it absolutely spot-on center.

I guess the brake locks will be used now, too, along with the ubiquitous block of wood in front of the tires.

That's the stupid part. I have a great set. 4 of 'em. I also am incredibly lazy sometimes. It was the effort of taking them out of a plastic bin that was too much. They aren't even buried or anything. Right there next to the garage door. I wouldn't have even had to walk 5 feet from the van. Next time, after I move, when I won't be able to find them, at least I'll have a decent excuse for XJ abuse.
