On mine main line goes to carb and other smaller one goes to each (4) carb boots. Is this correct?

Yes, bigger fuel hose to carbs rack. Smaller vacuum hose to one of the four carb vacuum ports (it's usually #3). The unused vacuum ports should have a cap/clamp combination installed.

You should only have one fuel line on your carbs. I think that either you have a different XJ than you think you do, or you have carbs from a later XJ (or a different bike entirely).

what bike are you talking about.......yr, make & model.....???? post in your signature....

if you are talking '82 XJ750J Maxim........you have 1 fuel line coming off petcock to fuel rail inlet between carb body #1 & #2 and the vacuum line from petcock to vacuum port on #2 carb.......#1, #3, #4 vacuum ports are capped off with rubber caps with clamps.....

Just thinking out loud, but he might have a later Canadian xj750, which would put him in the era of the emissions "octapus"

Jeff, what fiveofakind is saying is that many of the members here put their bike in their signature and bold or highlight it. Then there is no confusion as to which model is in question.

He isn't snubbing you, he is pointing out an issue that has been present on this site for some time now. And you ARE a 'newbie' here, at least in regards to your number of posts.

I personally have given incorrect advice to others based on my experience with an XJ650 Maxim and ass-u-ming that the details were transferable to any model XJ . . . . They aren't (always, sometimes).

We want to help, there is a lot of smart people here (five is one of them) and our intent is to have the best community on the World Wide Web.

1982 xj750J. A Maxim. Post up a pic of your carbs, because there should only be a single fuel line and no vent lines that year.

    Do they look like this?
The above are carbs from an xj900, which have larger carb throats than the XJ750 carbs. You can use them, but it would require a rejet and you might not get optimum performance even then. The fuel line is the one on the left in this photo (yours may have the fuel line on the right depending on which XJ900 they came from). The small lines are float bowl vents (they don't hook to anything) and the other big one is for the emissions canister (IIRC).

Do me a favor and check the shorty VIN on the engine. You might have an engine transplant.

    Jeffb18618,

I am sorry if you took my post the wrong way.......my sarcastic sense of humor.....as Stumplifter indicated, numerous newbie's will ask questions without us knowing what year or model.....

if you have an 1982 XJ750J Maxim or Seca, with stock carbs, then you should only have one fuel line & one vacuum line coming off petcock..... the other 3 vacuum ports are plugged off with vacuum caps.....

If your carbs look like above, then someone has changed out the original carbs...............

Hey, my name is Jeff B ...originally from York, PA.....

Hope you have a great day.....

I am the original owner of my 1982 XJ750J Maxim for over 30 yrs now.....so I am very familiar with this yr & model.....and have done alot of reading and listening on this site.......numerous members have helped me along the way with my 2 yr restoration of my bike ......and many thanks to them......these bikes require a lot of time, patience, and money ( sometimes ).......

bigfitz52 ( have not seen him nor heard from him ) & k-moe and others who I have failed to mention offer some of the best advice here on this forum.....

Jeff, your petcock should have one fuel line towards the front and one vacuum line in back. vacuum line goes to any handy vacuum port on the intake tubes and the other 3 are capped.
PA, eh. Pirates or Phillies, Flyers or Pens ?

His initial post indicates that he is talking about which carb boot does the smaller line off the petcock go to ? I am assuming he has a stock 1982 XJ750J carb rack.....which would mean there are no float bowl vents to worry about....

That's what my first reply implied then things got distorted even after several other members replied the same thing. We're asking to determine whether the rack is stock.

I would say JeffB needs to pipe in & be more specific as to his carb rack.....& by what he means by "each of the (4) carb boots"
