Another xj650 bobber work in progress

What he said about the rivet nuts ^^ its really simple. I haven't replaced my valve cover gasket but i need to it looked a little worn i just didnt have the time and there haven't been any leaks but its going to get done sooner or later.

 

I got ya... can you take them off without removing the engine from the frame?

 

what shocks are on there now? stock ones?

How does it sound with the muffler-less exhaust? It looks like you just run right out of the headers under the body there.

 

Yeah they are cut off right under the footpegs from the previous owner. Its loud... really loud haha and doesnt have enough back pressure so it pops every now and then.

But im just waiting to get a 4-1 system soon.

 

looking very good, how did you paint your gauges? and what are you using for side covers?

 

Looks great so far. Where did you order the seat? Did you send them the cardboard template to make a seat from?

btw. I might take those crash bars off your hands for my gf's pretty nonbobber if your not gonna use em.

 

Well its been a while since i posted in this forum but i thought i would show the updates ive made to the bike.



Chopped the frame and lowered the rails where the seat sits



Some z-bars and I Have led blinkers on my forks just above the belt but i still need to get some for the rear.



This is where i relocated my start button for now until i get some new sides..
by the way, anyone here have a pair of side covers they want to sell? ha

 

Looks good man! I've been thinking about switching to those Z bars too and I dig your seat.

 

Its been a while since i have updated this, but it almost spring and im getting stir crazy and can't wait to start tweaking the bike some more.

As of now this is how it has been sitting for the winter.
-I finally put some forward controls on - feels so much better
-Put some blinkers in the rear where the shotgun shells used to be
-Relocated the ignition to right below the side cover
-Rebuilt the carbs and have all the valves in spec (runs mean now!)
-I also got a mod that holds my cell phone on the handlebars and doubles as my new speedometer - works great!

What did you use for the in-frame turn signals? Those are pretty slick.. I've thought about trying something similar since I'm running no signals now. I just stuck a couple of little chrome plugs in my frame holes but I've been kicking around the idea of mounting some little LEDs in the plugs.

 

Thanks man! Im diggin the z bars right.. so ill pass on your offer ha. I got them online at scooterworks for pretty cheep though 20-40 bucks.
I really want to get some smaller controls and master cylinder.

And the turn signals were just bought at autozone.. they aren't LED's but they get the job done. Just fit them right in with some silicone, drilled some holes farther down, and fished the wires through.

 

Hi, I know this is an old thread but can you tell me whether you have just reused your existing Maxim rear fender or whether it is off another bike.

I have a XJ650 Seca 1981 which has a different rear end.. Cheers Buddy

 

Dudes been gone over 1.5 years so I doubt you'll get a response. That said, looks like the original fender rotated forward. There are others on here that have done that as well.
