Okay, so I really have one question and one request for advice. Long story short I got a set of slip on mufflers for my 82 650 maxim, Got it fairly cheap on ebay without any mounting hardware. Came in three parts, left side two into 1, right side two into 1, and a crossover pipe. My question is: do I need to go out and find gaskets for these parts? As for the advice, the head pipes on my bike now are in pretty good shape except that the two right side pipes seem to have the clamps rusted in place and the PO just cut off the original mufflers leaving those clamps on. Does anyone know a good way to get them loose so I can install the slip ons? Thanks in advance.

Pics of the setup would help. If it's anything like stock, then you do need gaskets.

Those seemed to be the most relevant angles.

There does not appear to be any relief cut into the pipes for clamps, nor are there any loops for springs. I can only assume that they are meant to be reatined entirely by the mounting points at the mufflers, which IMO is a problem. I also don't see any relief for gaskets. My thought is that you should dry fit them and see how well they meet up with the headers. I'm fairly certan that you'll want to use high-temp RTV, or muffler paste to seal the joints, but I am concerned that without any clamping force the exhaust will tend to want to move around and place undue stress on the headers (particularly at the header studs). I might just be worrying too much though.

Thanks, I will be checking the fit soon. I had completely forgotten about the liquid gasket route. I'll post some pictures of the dry fit just in case.

The ending bid was 105 plus like 13 for shipping. Thanks, I'm happy with the look but I'll feel better about it after it's installed.

Do you mean between the header connections or between the the mufflers in general?

What a small world. I grew up in Saginaw and frequented Stevens many many times back when I rode a RM250.

I'm going to attempt to make my own anyways. I can exhaust pipe pretty cheap and I have access to a bender so I will see how it goes.

After some fiddling and research I understand why the springs would be a good idea But as I have no mounting points for those I was thinking a set of rubber bushings at the mountings points on the mufflers might be a good idea. Any thoughts?

So I did some test fitting today and it looks like the mufflers will be angled much higher than I originally thought but I can't do a proper mock up until the new rear foot peg brackets come in. Also it turns out that the things I thought were rusted on clamps were actually the old muffler gaskets which will (hopefully) be easy to cut off.

I finally got a response from Jardine. It seems this model was produced before the ownership changed hands in 2012 but they were able to send me the simple instruction sheet. I figured I would share it here in case anyone else gets a 1370_001-page-001.jpg hold of an old set like these.
