Speed/Tach - industrial design

    Hi, I have been looking around at aftermarket dials for cafe/brat bikes.
    While many are nice, none come close to what I imagine my ideal dial to be.
    Being a designer, on a rainy sunday I created these sketches of what I would like.
    Would love to hear comments....

    riding around town 53km/h - 2200rpm 5th gear

    Neurtral - stationary - Right turn signal on idling at 1100rpm
    guage2 -0kmh -turn left.png

    Doing the ton 160km/h
    GPS speedometer is on and set to mph (100)
    6th gear and 4500rpm
    Trip is on 28.1km
    headlights are on

    This dial is meant to be endless meaning that if your bike can do 340km/h, this will still show it.
    If your bike revs to 13000rpm, no problem.

    Other features:
    Oil, temp and batt warning lights (just above the indicators)
    headlights with high beam
    trip and odo
    gear indicator
    gps speedomemter which can be shown in km or miles.

    That is really cool! Keeps the dash very minimal because theres no need for a separate tach/speedo. Also looks very aerospace like.

    To my eye, combining both gauges on one dial makes it difficult to read. Too much going on at once. The harder it is to read, the longer your eyes are off the road.

    I agree, especially since each hand would move independently and not "clock-like". Maybe if you had one hand and could select Speedo or Tach mode and the other data would display electronically. Other than that I think it looks cool!

    Hey thanks for the feedback.

    My idea was that the by far the most used info on a dial is the speed. (I marked my local speed limits with a touch of red to make it easier to see this.)
    I use the tacho much less. Relying on sound and vibration more than anything. I do check it when I plan to down shift to overtake though.
    The only other thing I often want to know while in motion is my gear.
    All the rest is info to be looked at when you are on an open stretch or stopped.

    That was my thinking if its worth anything.

    I don't know about other riders, but I only look at the speedometer when I'm in patrolled areas. The tach is more useful to me. I tend to find that it is a more reliable indicator of my current speed (but my speedometer really needs to be recalibrated).

    I guess it is probably pretty questionable in the patrolled areas as well :rolleyes:

    p.s. I know how it is. Just like with my bike, I rode it the first time with my smartphone and a GPS speedo running to get an idea of the accuracy of the speedo at the mandated speed limits.
