    This is an 82 XJ750J bought new and only has a little over 30, 000 miles.
    Starts up good and runs great, but;
    When you try to restart after a ride of approximately 10 miles or more in hot weather, and the engine is all warmed up, it doesn't want to restart as it should.
    And might have to let it set for as much as 20 or 30 minutes until it does.
    However, sometimes, but not always, it will then start if I open the throttle grip all the way open, before I hit the starter button.
    The battery is good, as it does start to crank over the motor, before the starter kicks off and whirls back a little, but then;
    Just let it set a while, and it will start back up as though nothing was ever wrong.
    Being that this RESTART is only a problem when the engine is hot, so many things have came to mind as the problem:
    Heat soak, fuel vapor lock, ignition coils that build up extra resistance when hot, (and even thought I might have to insulate the two coils from this heat), or maybe even the ignition control module that now becomes more sensitive to heat?
    OR, maybe even the starter, or starter selenoid that's negatively reacting to the heat?

    QUICK QUESTION:
    BECAUSE IT'S NOW WINTER TIME, AND I CAN'T DUPLICATE THE HEAT FACTOR TO DO ALL THESE TESTS THAT MAY BE NEEDED,
    HAS ANYONE ELSE EXPERIENCED THIS?
    AND IS THERE A COMMON CHARACTERISTIC OF THIS PROBLEM WITH THE XJ750 AS THEY GET OLDER?
    Thanks to all for your replies, especially those that have, been there done that!
    Hoping for an early spring this year.
    Bob

    Whe is the last time your cabs were wet set?

    When is the last time you checked your valves?

    Difficulty with a hot restart is THE classic symptom of tight exhaust valve clearances.

    Time to pull the valve cover and check clearances. http://www.xjbikes.com/forums/posts/122016/

    Unless you have personally done that job, it's safe to assume that it's never been done.

    Another +1. My Kaw 750 did the same thing until I did valve clearances as well. Starts almost the instant you touch the starter now.

    cold engines like a rich mixture to start, hot engines like a lean mixture.
    some dirt bikes have a "hot start" lever for this. make sure your chokes are closed all the way and the mixture might be a tad rich. how long has it been since you set the valves?
