Okay, as promised. Here is the easy way to get paint off of plastic parts:

How do you make sure there is no residue or anything absorbed into the plastic that would affect subsequent paint?

 

Hey Hogfiddles, good question.

In this case, the original did not have paint on it, other than the black at the bottom of the side cover. I used a primer made for plastic adhesion then taped off and spray painted the lower part of the panel, followed by a clear coat. I'm no expert on paint, and you are right, there may be a residual from the easy-off that may have been absorbed into the plastic after several hours of being coated with it.

A secondary treatment on some of the parts that I have cleaned off (wanting to expose just the plastic) involves scraping off a thin layer of plastic with a razor blade or utility knife (box cutter as the media likes to call them). You can sand off a thin layer as well with a DA sander and light (320 or lighter) grit. This is followed by melting a thin layer of the newly scraped (or sanded) part with a heat gun (the type sold to remove peeling paint).

The primer, or secondary treatment would probably render ineffective or rid (in the case of scraping) the part of any residue (if there is any effect of the residue on the subsequent coat of paint).

Here is a picture of a fender on one of my DT175s that I'm taking off a layer of UV faded plastic



I removed the fender from the bike for the rest of the project. This is one of the reasons that someone down the line will pull out the rattle can and start spraying plastic parts (UV fade looks bad), but "flat black" everything looks worse, and rattle can red (without a good clear coat) turns pink in the sun.

Carefully applying the heat gun, melts down the ridges of the scraper (or the scratches of the sanding) for a smooth glossy new(ish) looking plastic part.

Here's the latest acquisition (also showcased in "other" motorbikes). A 1974 CZ 125 MX bike with a 380cc motor I'll be putting into it.

Right now I have three tagged and ready to ride,A kawasaki, a TW200, and my triumph.in the building is my 79 cb750f with 139000mi. Smokes abit but runs another 79cb750 not running a cb350f it is close has charging issues and as of Tuesday a xj maxim 650 and I see cafe in it's future my first shafty I'm excited.

different for me, difficult to justify two bikes.

 

I have the same syndrome 900 seca, 750f Honda, 3xs 650s, 2kz 650s, BMW K1200RS, gpz900, DT 400, gs750 suzuki and Kawasaki 1000 concours just sold a 750 Nighthawk this week. Thinking it's time to sell a couple to finish my big v-twin project...

 

no more difficult to justify three or four or ......
Ideally you have a minimum of eight bikes cause you need something to ride Sunday night after washing and maintenance of the other 7.
see that way easy and works for any number of bikes.
2 bikes is so you have something to ride to the parts shop when doing maintenance and repairs of your other bike
it just gets easier and easier
3 bikes is so you have a bike to ride when the first one needs maintenance, the 3ed bike is still what you ride to the parts shop or after washing and maintenance of the other

my next bike is going to be a parts bike then my current parts bike goes into the rotation and I ride the new parts bike to the shop to pick up parts.
you always need a parts bike when you have old bikes.........

I purchased another bike...does that count? ha ha. Another classic CZ this one is an enduro out of the early 70's, haven't seen it in person yet, but couldn't resist.
Still ticking off the numbers towards that magical 366. (only 350 to go...oh boy).

Now, I have to somehow get it from Thunder Bay! Ack! A 32 hour round trip.

Anyone heading through there with a trailer or pick up truck heading east?

 

Close enough for me. It will not be long till you have 366 bikes.

 

My list of "dream motorbikes" is certainly long enough to cover 366...

What the heck is going on with the front suspension on the Greeves? Unusual setup! I've never seen a springer style front end like that!

 

It does look odd doesn't it? Haha. Leading link front suspension, some European manufacturers like DKW carried this idea into the 70's.

The ubiquitous Honda cub has a mini version of this front suspension set up.

It looks like it would add a lot of negative whatchamacallit in the whosemadingey.
Positive caster in the steering axis? How"s the stability? Matti's primitive brain says it would want to turn around like a shopping cart's front wheel to negative caster.

I think you have the exact terminology the engineers used while throwing together these whosemadingies. The enhanced sproingyness probably offsets the whatchamacallit's propensity to behave as a shopping cart.

I think the point was to look cool, functionality aside.

 

Oops, make that three CZ's... 2 1976 CZ 988.2's and a 175. I have a friend heading back from Alberta next month, so he'll throw them in the back of his pickup truck

 

I've only ever had one motorcycle. The '83 550 Maxim I bought just before we were married, and still riding today.

When I bought it I was torn between a 500 Honda Shadow or the Yamaha. A year or so later, I wish I had the Shadow. 30 years later, I 'm glad I bought the Yamaha.

 

Okay, now it's 4 CZs and three spare motors along with a frame and several boxes of parts. 4 more CZs to pick up later on this summer (purchased, but scattered over the country from Ottawa to Thunder Bay to Lloydminster AB...).

I sold a dozen bikes this year, picked up another 6... Definitely need more motorbikes! I'm Sure I'll find something to drag home from mid Ohio next week

Keep an eye out for Japanese vintage MX bikes. Some of them could bring you a pretty penny on resale (especially the '74 and earlier models)
