So I just got an 82 xj750 for $500...it started but only poped and sputtered and died as soon as it was given any throttle... I thought a simple carb channing would do the trick... now it won't start at all.... this is the first bike carb(s) I have cleaned... my question is... is there any other things besides the carburetors that could be an issue? Or should I just have the carbs sent in to a professional?

Also this is my first time in a forum... so if I am asking something that has already been asked or doing something wronew please let me know..

try some starter fluid. how cold is it where the bike is stored?
if the choke (enrichment circuit pick up is plugged you will not get any gas for the motor using the choke.
the choke is not a real choke it is an enrichment circuit.

    look at this thread
    http://www.xjbikes.com/forums/threads/xj700-carb-bowl.82180/#post-498988

there is a tube that goes into hole in the wall of the carb bowl that is where the choke draws gas from

I will let those who do it give you a quote.
Have you checked your oil level? you want to make sure your crank case is correct and not full of gas.
up on centerstand oil should be between lines on site glass..

can you tell us a little history of the bike?
my history is 10 to 14 years sitting out side bushes growing up and around it never heard it running.
I think you get the idea.

also is your battery fully charged if it drops below 9.5 volts when cranking bike is not going to start starter will still spin strong

also the pilot jet runs the bike until about 2k rpm that is when the main jets kick in

The guy I got it from said he had been riding it for about 5 years... said he parked it last July when he got a new bike that was bigger. Apparently it ran fine when he parked it. Then around the beginning of February he went to start it and it would only run with three choke on and die as soon as he gave it any gas. I used carb cleaner to clean the carbs the other night and ended up where I'm at now. I have had the bike less than a week and have not had much time to work on it yet.

    Kevin,
Welcome to the camp. Read those links that XJ550H posted, it will enlighten you to what your future holds.

Spraying carb cleaner at your carbs will not make your bike reliable. Following through with a meticulous attention to detail will give you the sweetest ride on the block. Do not be intimidated by anything you read, people here have done it before and can talk you through it.

What you have is a very good bike that has been neglected by the PO, a little love, some time and a few $$$ and she will reward you in the power band range.

I think because I don't know much about bikes yet I may be ahead to let a professional do the work.... I want this to be a reliable bike and a main form of transportation. I still want to learn but I would rather it be on a bike that will be my daily rider. So another question.... would I be able to have a mechanic clean and synchroniz the carbs for under the $500 dollar range? Thankyou for all the help and advice so far... I am learning more about this bike every minute lol.

If you do all the work on your car, you can do all of the work on your motorcycle.

Should i get a rebuild kit or should I just dissemble and clean everything. I assume they are the same as rebuilding a car carb. The main thing that makes me hesitate is the fact that there are four carburetors. I hear that they are hard to get back together if you disassemble them.
