In line fuel filter

    Looking to get an in line filter, what size brake hose is on a '81 xj550rj?

    Your bike's fuel line is a metic size, but I think you will find that a filter with a 1/4 inch nipple will work.

    Try to get a sintered filter (Chacal sells them). The paper filters don't work good on xj's.

    There isn't much room for most inline fiters. Chacal sells a variety of mini-filters that will fit with room to spare.

    notice how he runs the fuel line behind the carb rack
    I go down the side and to the tee from the back avoiding the fuel line holder on the top of the rack . you need to go low and away from the petcock to get filter to fill up with out a bubble in it

    unless I'm looking at a different one then I don't think it's suppose to be curved it just did that with age.
    thats what he is warning about the age of these filters.

    Agreed. It's not curved new. He also stated for the cost of replacing them every two to three years or so (Fitz is also a frequent rider) it's cost effective. I've replaced mine once in four years because it was doing the same thing. I'm not refuting the filter 550 posted cause I've never tried it.

    my oreilly's has them under part number Part # 7-02357-1 for 3.79 each

    +2. 550 appears to have no issues with them and Fitz also said he was looking for one like that but couldn't find one. That's two solid references which is good enough for me to try one.

    I used to use the 90º plastic one because there is so little room under the 750 seca tank, but that 180º one does fit without any problem. I do need to let y'al know that if you aren't careful with fuel-line length that it will rattle on the carb rail and make you think you have a problem in the top end.

    I don't know, and I don't see why it would ever need to be replaced. It's a sintered bronze filter element. If it ever gets clogged, just take it out and backflush it with carb cleaner.

    i use a straight clear one from the lawn mower rack at Advance. plastic screen inside, one inch from the petcock. thought about gluing a little magnet to it but never got around to it.
