Bike is an 82 xj650. I'm having some trouble with the Headlight, if I just turn the key to on, the low beam comes on and high beam functions fine from the switch , but as soon as I actually start the bike, the headlight cuts off and neither low or high beam work at all. I'm pretty stumped here, anyone ever run into this issue?

    Probably not.
Best bet is that someone swapped the headlight and safety relays; probably because of a fault in one of the safety circuits.
The headlight realy is under the left side cover, just below the regulator (big aluminum finned box). The safety realy is under the fuel tank, near the rear tank mount.
Along the base where the realys connect to the wiring there should be a dot of paint. What colors are they?

So someone put two sidestand relays in places where sidestand relays don't belong (there should be one behind the left ignition coil).
The safety relay has no paint mark, and goes between the frame rails under the tank, just aft of the large turn signal self-canceling relay.
The headlight relay has a yellow dot, and goes below the voltage regulator/rectifier under the left side cover.

I think that Chacal has relays in stock, or you could try Ebay.

Excellent. Thank you! I did get it to stay on by swapping some relays around, still not quite right, but functional until I snag a replacement.
