No key for the gas cap, how would you open it?

The title sum it all up. I have a 650 seca tank with gas cap but no key. I can't remember if I have it and can't find it or never got a key for it.

Just trying to figure out how to open it without drilling it out if any other option are available.

 

I know a guy...but he's stuck in a government run "hotel" for a few months.

Take the tank to a locksmith (drain it first).

 

A locksmith should be able to open it - if not and you're happy to buy a new cap they can drill the lock

 

If you lose your key(s), or obtain a used gas tank that still has a (locked) cap on it but with no key, then it may be time for you to learn the ancient art of lock-picking:

You need this.i have had many ppl lose keys and this is the magic to fix the problem.

 

Be careful with how you proceed, pick wisely (wether a locksmith or yourself), I have been down a similar path . . . ain't pretty:

The key with gas caps is to put downward pressure to take tension off the locking tabs so that tumbler will turn with very light force

 

Face the fact that the tumbler is going to take the hit no matter what you do.
The brass leaves/wafers inside are easy to shear off with a big flat head screwdriver.
Push down with a twisting motion back and forth. The leaves/wafers will eventually give.

Replace the cap, or rebuild the lock without the leaves/wafers.
Still needs a key, but not limited to a specific matched key.
There is no reason for a key specific lock on the tank. Only the ignition.

...until gas prices go back up. You'd think a thef would know to just drain the tank from the petcock, but in my experience...not so much lol.

 

Thieves don't worry about a key either. They just pry the cap off, and destroy the tank!
5 gal of gas @ $5. Let them take a screwdriver to the lock. The tank is worth more!

 

Ya, there is that.

 

Finesse is the key (pun intended) to locks be it tanks seats or ign switch
You can make tools with cotter pins and a hammer and anvil
A flat one to turn the tumble and a wavy one to jiggle the wafers
With a little practice and a soft touch it becomes very easy
Just saying I can steal any bike in about 45 seconds without breaking anything and 1970- 1982 Yamaha locks in about 15 seconds

 

Any lock can be picked. No question about it.
If it takes you 45 seconds around where I am at. Your already hospital bound!! If not the morgue!!

That 45 seconds is from the time I see your bike until You see it riding away..
The time it take to pay for the full tank of gas you gave me,or the time it takes to grab a pop at 7-11
What gas station do you use...? Lol
Of course the pros do it with balls.
Had a friends co worker stop on Robson street a very busy place for coffee and was 30' from bike watching it and 4 guys and in a van pull up with 2 lengths of pipe and slip it through frame and gone in a couple of seconds police found the stolen van 40 min later but never got his bike back
