Started to clean engine to see if there is an oil leak. Constantly had smoke coming from front. Most likely just old oil sitting there and burning off, but wanted to be sure.
For whatever reason, I don't like to take off exhausts off bikes. Did the best I could for now without. There was a lot of gunk on that latch.
At some point I'll lift the bike up and do a more thorough cleaning, especially around the belly pan where I saw fresh oil drops. They are either coming from that clutch rod seal or the sump gasket is leaking.

And just a long shot, and have not yet consulted to manual, but this appears to be a drain screw. Any ideas?
I actually forgot but am sure i drained the oil from somewhere else. This is located on left side at the rear of the engine.
I could always just crack it open and see when comes out :)

Got a goodie bag from Japan this morning. Woohoo. Only took 4 days from order to arrival.
Radiator, sprocket cover, clutch slave and radiator guard.
New chain and sprockets arrive tomorrow.

Totally forgot about the rear stand that I ordered. Arrived today as well. Now I can loosen the chain a bit and ride it to the shop for the tire and sprocket change. After I swapped the radiator of course.

All done. Swapped radiator which looked like new, installed the new cover and adjusted the chain to give more slack where it was tight. Only took me 1.5 hours.
Clutch seems to be a bit soft, need to bleed again. Will look into clutch slave rebuild this weekend.

Now the bike can pretty much go to the shop for tires, sprockets and chain. I don't want to rivet the chain myself else I would have just dropped off the wheels. I just need to make time, the shop is closed on weekends, unfortunately. As I took the last two Fridays off, i can't do again today.

Clutch slave rebuilt. All cleaned up and put in new spring and seals.
Clutch lever has good pressure now and is no longer spongy.
I will drop off bike Tuesday morning for the tires and sprockets. The new oil seal should be here by then. And that's pretty much it for now and it's ready for inspection.
Would be perfect timing because I am going on vacation in 2 weeks and am taking a bike. Haven't decided yet which one.
Since I am going to see Dave, Major Pita would be a good choice as Dave helped out a lot during the build. But on the other hand, roads are smooth and no traffic, so the fzr would be a lot of fun. We'll see. :D

Nah, can only take one. The rest of the trailer is for the kids' battery driven cars.

We had pedal power. Bikes, trikes, go karts, nothing motorized. Ma n Pa wanted to burn kid energy. Apparently I was a pain...

Took the bike out for a half mile run not to stress her too much because of the chain. Think I'm gonna call her Rita, because the retard comparison still sticks. And kind of works with Pita.

Anywho, ride was good, didn't see any leaks or smoke afterwards. I'll check again once the new chain is on and I can take her for a longer spin.
Shifting was so much better now that the clutch lever has full pressure.

I do think I want to fit a steering damper on the bike at some point. If anyone has any experience with it (aftermarket install), please let me know.
In the meantime, I'll browse the internet to find options.

Think I got it figured out. Just need to measure fork diameter and double check something on the bike.

Edit: pulled the trigger on an ohlins damper.

Dropped off the bike today. 5 mile ride, no problemo. All the cockpit parts were shaking and the speedo cable came off, but that was about all there was. Great ride

Got bike back with new tires, sprockets and chain.
For whatever reason, I am having issues shifting now. Shifting down is a total b**, shifting up is better.
I'll double check if the shifter was installed properly. Must be something easy, hopefully, because it was fine before.

Other than that, bike is a total blast. Runs great, sounds good and handling is pretty good, too. Still getting used to the bike, but shouldn't take long. It's similar to my MV.

    Found the culprit. Idiotic.
When I got the bike back, one of the bolts that hold the sprocket cover was lose and sticking out. I noticed it was bent today and put one and one together.
    All fine again.

Getting a bit more time on bike now. Bike runs great, but there is one thing that is a bit off. It's most likely related to carbs, but doesn't bother me that much (yet). Would still be good to know what to look for next time I have the carbs off:

Opening up the throttle quickly will accelerate the bike nicely but at one certain point it jumps a bit (like getting extra fuel) and only once.
If I open the throttle gradually it doesn't do it.

I have to put more miles on the bike and I am sure it will smoothen things out a bit, just curious what the above described "power surge" could be.
Btw, last time I had the airbox off, my #4 carb slide was still a bit slow to return.

Ok. Yeah, that's what I noticed. Was hoping it would correct itself over time because all slides worked fine after cleaning but carbs sat in garage for a few weeks before I installed them. When I put them in, I noticed 3 and 4 were a bit slow in return.

Looks like I am getting another FZR 1000. It's complete but needs some work. Next project. Anyway, I am planning on swapping tank and all plastics over to mine since it is more rare than the other. And those parts are in great shape. When swapping things I will pull the carbs and check the slides again. In the meantime I'll ride it and just avoid opening the throttle too quickly.

Went to see hogfiddles today and got my inspection on the way.
I put a little over 200 miles on the bike and she ran like a champ. Great bike, not a single issue, no leaks either.
Having a difficult time getting her into neutral every time, all other gears are fine. I'll look into this when back home. In the meantime, I'll enjoy my vacation and hopefully put a few more miles on the bike.

Glad we could get the inspection done while you were here, too!

Good to see you again, my friend, have a safe time for the rest of your vacation!

Well, I like this bike so much, I just brought home a big sister. It's an 1988 fzr 1000, complete with everything and 4200 miles on her. Check out what goodies came with it. And yes, those are two original and still in original packaging brand new side fairings. :) oh, and a spare 1000cc engine came with it as well.

Plan is to swap plastics, missing brackets and chopped parts over to mine and keep this one naked. Needs work though, but no rush.

Need to clean the tank I got with the new bike so I can swap it over. After reading a few things about this topic, I decided to go with white vinegar. Fill it up and let it sit for 3 days. Let's see how that goes

Yeah, one of my favorite bikes so far. Good looking and a little power bundle. The fzr feels the same but is bigger and fits me better with my 6.2 feet. That's why I love the fzr so much. Can't wait to dress her up fully. Gonna look sweet, but some work to do as I also have to swap ignition coils over-this means moving the radiator out of the way again. It's a pain. On mine, they put them in the wrong spot and just bent a bracket to attched them. But the new bike also came with a new set as well. Seriously, the parts alone I got are worth what I paid for the bike.

She's gonna look sharp. Here the new one kind of dressed up. Hoping to start work soon.
I have to say, white wheels on a bike just look awesome. I might have to spray Rita's rims white at some point. Currently they are black.

Tank has a bit of surface rust, nothing to worry about at all. I filled it up with vinegar and will let it sit for 2 days.
    Here after two hours..

Most likely loose stuff, I'll keep taking pics over next two days. Old petcock is a bit leaking which turns this into a smelly and messy job.

I would be using the one on the right. Obvious that the one on the left has been hacked up.

BTW, I have used EvapoRust to clean fuel tanks, and Caswell coatings to seal them with very good results.

So I take it you're sticking with the FZR's for now? Looks like they'll be well worth it as they were very highly rated machines back in the day.

Yeah, sticking with them for now.
The 750 is a bit rare, only 200 imported that year if I read correctly. I should be done fixing it up today, most of it is swapping stuff over from the spare bike and cleaning up the PO's mess.
Once that's done, the spare bike is getting a make over and will stay naked and customized a bit.

But the 750 is now a 1000cc, so technically you have 3 FZR1000cc bike's and the 750 is not original right?
Looks like with all the goodies pictured you should be able to have a very nice original example, the 750 with the 1000cc swap, then a street fighter correct?

Well, I have two. The 750 and the 1000. The 750 with big engine, correct.
And hell yeah, streetfighter :) you're absolutely correct.
It's perfect for it, just check it out with subframe taken off...

The second bike needs some work though: valve check, tires, fluids, carbs cleaned etc.

I'm taking the 750 to a bike show next sunday, maybe I put a for sale sign on it, not sure yet. The more I ride it, the lower the chances I'm selling. Totally reminds me of my buell, but much bigger and roomier.
Oh btw, no more sticky carb slides on her either. Checked while I'm having it apart.

Done with electrical and bike is still running. Yay.
Tank came out super clean, looks like new.
Only thing left for now is to swap petcock over and double check everything before fairings go on.

Hmm, I rinsed it with baking soda, then again with clear water and hair dried it. Think I'm going to put some fuel in and shake it around to cover everything. That cool?

Too bad the tires are shot that are mounted on the white wheels. Wouldn't be safe to swap them over.

    Yeah, I thought about that.
I could get that done in time but would also have to get a new sprocket. And when doing all the work and take them off, I would want to powder coat them so I don't have to go through this again (removal, tires off, sprocket etc)

The white paint on the spare bike is not that great anymore. Lots of chipped areas and dirt that doesn't want to come off. maybe I cheat and spray paint them for now and do it right later.

decided to put white decal strips on, just put in an order. This will give a better transition from white fairing to black wheels and will work for now until i have everything done correctly (powder coat)

Running into some massive issues trying to fit the side fairings and just can't figure out why.
This is left side only for now, haven't even tackled the right.
If the side fairing is on, the nose doesn't fit. And if the nose is on and aligns with the side panel, the holes for the latter don't align.

On the spare bike (an original 1000), it appears to fit much better. I want to exclude bent brackets because they are not.
Only thing I could imagine is that the front strays (that hold instruments and nose) are either out of wack OR slightly different from the 1000. Remember, it should still be a 750 part. But I don't really want to believe that...

I'll measure it tonight to be sure.

Think I'll also compare the side fairings that I have with the ones that originally came with the bike. Driving me nuts
