What kind of oil for my 1982 xj750 maxim oil change?

I have a 1982 Yamaha XJ750 Maxim and would like to fix it, it is over filled with oil and seems to be having an issue in 2nd slipping & dropping back down to first, I have to shift fast through 2nd it only gives me a few a 5mph window. This is frustrating cause you wanna be faster off the line in Los Angeles.
Can someone please help.

Dunno how hot LA is this time of year, but Rotella 15w40 by Shell works great for the Canadian summer. There's a thread by one of the gurus named K-moe titled Choosing the Right Oil For a Wet Clutch Motorcycle. It has all the info you need. You can either search that using the search function on the forum, or find a post by @k-moe, and click the link in his signature.

 

I use Valvoline 10W40

 

Any good quality motorcycle specific 10w40 should be fine. I use synthetic, but some folks seem to have problems with it in these bikes. The gear issue is more a concern to me. Someone on here will probably address that for you.

 

I have an 82 maxim, and I use 15w40 shell rotella t. However, I am in the northeast. You might be better served by a 20w50, at least during the summer.

I doubt your shifting issue is related to oil choice, though. I'd pull the engine cover where your shifter is, and take a peek in there to see if anything is in there that shouldn't be. It's possible you may have broken pieces of the rubber alternator chain guide gunning up the works.

Your slipping out of 2nd sounds like worn dogs. Check for bits of the alernator chain guide, and look at the shift mechanism for undue wear, but in all honesty I think you'll be doing some surgery to fix the problem (or just skip second. it's not really necessary to use it unless you're sneaking home after curfew).

 

With bike on center stand the oil should be approx. 3/16" below the top of the sight glass on the right side. I think some X J's have actual level marks, my 650 does not.

 

All the XJs I've worked on (650, 750) have oil level marks. They are cast into the clutch cover on either side of the sight glass. They are, however, very shallow and somewhat indistinct. I didn't even realize they were there until my third oil change.

 

my vision is certainly not a strong point in these 'mature years' of life . . . just sayin'.

Does your oil smell like gas? I see a possible carb teardown and rebuild in your future.

 

Mobil Delvac 1300 15w 40 just because the jug has a nicer spout than Rotella

 

Yes, and Crystal Head Vodka has a cooler bottle than Ketel One, but It's not worth the price of admission.

Never, ever use a synthetic oil in these XJ motors...stick with mineral oils only, synthetic oils will severely affect the starter, look up starter clutch repairs, very expensive.
