Today I couldn't figure out why my XJ wasn't starting or running as nice as it had been. Road the bike to work and had the same problem when the work day was done. I got out of the parking lot and it hit me. I didn't put the cap back on the number four carb. I took it off and put it in on my other XJ that I am trying to sell, since I had a potential buyer and had borrowed one to replace a torn cap (didn't sell the bike). So, I made an unexpected stop to get another cap and she runs right again.

Left it parked. Drove the Jeep to work. Of course I was still half-asleep when the decision was made, so it may not have been entirely stupid.

One of each Maxim is far more complete. They are the 2cyl ones, not the oooooh so sexy 4cyl Japan models.
Sorry they are the xs400j and xs400rj.
Ok groan boring twin but they built them like and XJ , twin cam alternator in the back style.

SAM_0184.JPG Today, last day of 80 degree weather , left my son (18th birthday in 7 days ) who was a big part of the re-build we just finished ( check "650 bobber build" ), take the '85 - 700 Maxim to High School. It does have current plate and tag but does not have current inspection, just got it finished last week-end. Oh and by the way , taught him to ride when he was 15, just never got around to getting a drivers license for M/C. So we'll see at the end of the day if it falls into this thread, LOL

Shoot. I was excited for an xj4 build, especially when you said Seca! Oh well, Xs is OK, I guess. Lol. Start a thread, we're still interested.

    I did this stupid thing.
I noticed a bit of popping on accel last week and decided that it's time to put in my spare rack of carbs that I rebuilt last winter. So I did that this morning.
Idled great, got them synched and went for a ride.

    A very short ride.
Not 10 minutes in I come to a stoplight and the engine wants to idle at 4k. So I pull to a parking lot and futz with the idle speed knob. No bueno, so I side-street it home and get to work.

What do I find? Cracked vacuum port caps. YAY!! eazy fix. Start her up and.....

    idle at 4k

So off comes the spare rack, in go the originals. Start her up. Idles at 1.2K, just where I had it.
    Go ride.
    Smile.
    Rid harder.
    Smile some more.

Now....to find the vacuum leak on my rebuilt rack..... bummer. It only shows up when the engin is good and hot, so I'm hoping that it's a case of me fubaring a throttle shaft seal (or some other simple thing) and not cracked carb body.

It was synched beautifully before the ride, and was still running smooth after (just at too high of a speed).

Well, this is the closest thread to my stupidity. If any of you been here for a while you know I have been re-building my 85 maxim 700 for over 2 yrs now, and with all the help of this site, she was finally done a few weeks ago. I did get her out once, was about a 150 mile day. Not much riding time left here in West Central PA, but was planning on enjoying as much of it that I could. Until last Wednesday, I was helping a guy I knew put up roof SAM_0214.JPG trusses on a large pole barn, my son has been helping him for a week or so and they wanted another set of hands to get it under roof before weather changed. So anyway after about 2 hrs, we were swinging a 30' trusses up onto the stud wall, me at one end and my 18 yr old son on the other. My end slipped off the stud wall and I tried to stop it while being 12 high on a metal step ladder and it pulled me straight down onto the cement floor. I landed flat footed and that was the last time I have been on my feet. After E.R., X-Rays then by ambulance to larger city trauma center, more C.T. scans, and a lot of pocking and prodding, the results are in ! I have crushed both heel bone, that's one in each foot. No weight at all, going to schedule surgery , in a wheel chair for 3 to 4 month, and even then probably long term stiffness and pain. Some insurance with low limits and no disab. insur and no job, ADD NO MAXIM !!! :(.
