I have a 80 650 and sometimes when I start my bike the button stops working for a couple of presses then it starts working again, I know I had a neutral safety switch and a clutch switch that's not the problem, so I just bought the same bike except it's a 81 and it's doing the same thing, I figured it was a bad connection, but for both to do the exact same thing I don't know? The wires look good and the button too, anyone else have this prob? My bike never fails to start so not a big deal yet, thanks

Have you opened it up and cleaned the contacts?

the button has a brass post and spring which makes the contact

or buy a new switch assembly from chacal or just a new button

Are you hearing click of solenoid when you push the button but no start? Or just no sound at all? If you hear the click , then the starter solinoid needs looked at ,my seca was doing similar thing last week and swapped in a rebuilt one and works like new.

No it's dead silent, and my 1980 contact point looks good, I could push in the button and hold it down I try moving the button around and it does nothing till I let up on the button and try again and then sometimes not right away just second or third try it will go, I guess I'm going to look a little deeper into it

the holder inside the control is likely bent from pushing to hard it only takes a light touch pushing harder does nothing.
open it up and clean it up it could be a loose wire that needs to be soldered

My 80 does the same thing. I usually open up the housing and clean it during winter maintenence. I also have a bullet connector on the wire that I can disconnect and ground to the handlebar to start it.

80/81 models get the ground through the handle bars. Rust, corrosin, changes to paints bars will affect it. Clean the area where the bars sit in the clamps and where the switch housing sits on the bars. If that's the issue, run a ground wire or get a switch housing from an 82/83 as they included the ground wiring.
