IMG_0310.JPG Hello my new xj friends. I am now the new owner of a 83 maxium 650 which was a birthday from a friend. The last owner was the original owner of the bike, but because of a car accident he can no longer ride because of a back injury. The bike has been sitting for seven years but still runs.
I have a worked on cars before but never a bike. Im not afraid to try especially when the internet can teach you anything. I have learned a lot all ready by reading a lot of forums on here.
But I still have questions like...
I want to do a complete over haul on the front brakes, but what do you guys prefer with new brake lines? And has anyone tried the colored brake lines?

Also for the brake lines, where do you get a new joint piece that connects the two brake lines together? Or can you completely bypassed it and connect from the master cylinder to the caliper?
(i'm sorry if these are completely newbie questions, but we all start somewhere?)

I completely rebuilt front and back. Straight forward job. I used stainless steel brake lines and while the work great, I actually prefer the softer feel of rubber lines. However, I've gotten used to them. I used compressed air to get the cylinders out and used reverse bleeding to put fluid back in the system and bleed them from the bottom up. Took 15-20 minutes.

Welcome aboard. Get a manual and start going through the scheduled maintenance which includes the brakes.

Read every thread in XJ DIY How-To Instructions.

    Read The Information Overload Hour.

Get the Haynes shop manual and the Yamaha factory service manual.

Then you will be prepared to reomission your classic motorcycle.

The brake line manifold (splitter) is not a part that normally needs to be replaced. Has your's been damaged?

It hasn't been damaged. I Just read a lot of other forums that said to replace everything and thought it meant the splitter as well.
