700/700x differences

Discussion in 'XJ Technical Chat' started by MattiThundrrr, Dec 3, 2016.

?

Is it worth it to go X?

  1. No. Looks are everything. If you want speed, buy a sport bike!

  2. 700x IS a sport bike! Overly complicated valve adjustments happen less often, and style is for slow!

I am having difficulties finding performance stats for the air cooled Maxim 700. Every page I find focuses on the 5 valve model. Has anyone ridden both? How big of a difference is there between the two? I prefer the clean styling and simplicity of a bike without a radiator, not to mention the lack of chrome on the air cooled 700, but the speed freak in me would hate to give up a lot of performance for a little style.

Quite a difference in power the x is in the 90 hp range vs the 700 is in the 70hp range. For highway riding or 2 up I'll take the X

The 700 airhead performs simmilarly to the 750 airhead.
The 750X performs simmialrly to this, but doesn't handle as well as the FZR.

If you really want speed over style there are plenty of 10 year-old sport-touring machines that can be had for about what a restored Maxim-X will cost you, and will kick the butts of both the X and the FZR (I'd still want the X though).

Can't go with anything with a fairing. Wife " knows" they are the fast ones. Cruisers are safer for her precious husband. Therefore, deception is in order. "See, sweetie pie? Not a crotch rocket! I can get this one?" Lol. Plus I wanna fool the guys with vtwin dinosaurs at work. They ridicule 750s as too small n slow, gotta teach em the replacement for displacement is engineering!

Yeah, if I had my way, there'd probably be a VFR in the garage. She who must be obeyed, and all that! Plus, I'd rather look at a bike's guts than a plastic cover.

Is the 900 much heavier than tbe 700? I like the 900, but if I'm going Seca I purrrfur the look of a 650, or one of those Japanese market 750s with 650 styling. Not asking a lot, am i?:p

For the record, the Yamaha manual states 511 lbs. is the "Wet" weight for the X.

The Maxim X is as fast a bike as you'll ever need for the street. Looks like a cruiser, but will try to pull you arms out of their sockets like a crotch rocket when you twist the throttle. If you want to have some excitement once in a while, I say you should get one. And, if you wife rides along, just keep the tach below 6 grand and short shift it.
    She'll never suspect its potential.

As for the guys at work, I got the same attitude. "When are you going to get a big boys bike", they asked. I just offered to let them have a try so they could see what they are missing out on. No takers 'cause none of them would consider anything but a Harley. The only respect I got is from one of the younger guys at work that has a CBR1000. Totally stunned at the combination of the 5-valve engine / cruiser / shaft drive combo. The others just don't have a clue.

Before being a bike rider I thought I wanted a Harley - then I got my Maxim, now I am a motorcycle enthusiast, proud to ride an XJ. (The ridicule doesn't stop, but it sure don't bother me!)

This is why I replied with the weight for the airhead, rather than the X

I knew a guy he only rode HD until he rode a goldwing..shortly there after he bought a goldwing and did not look back . My dad rides one he is on his 3rd ...he had a friend who bragged about how HD are made in US ...he looked kinda bad when my dad pointed out all the chineese , japanees and taiwan made parts...and my dad showed him his goldwing was made in Ohio. Personally I don't care I just love to ride no matter what it is or who makes it.

Based on the theme of the poll, and
having more info, than not enough, will help him find the answer he needs.

I do like the idea of a "Naked" Seca 900 though....

I have a 700X. I can't compare it to a 700 air cooled but I have a XJ650 and they are in two different leagues. I went to lunch with a Harley guy at work (who loves to bad mouth non-harleys) and on the way back we were riding side by side on a four lane road that was about to neck down to two lanes. He dropped back a few lengths and nailed it. I didn't realize what he was doing until he was going by me about 25 mph faster than me. I dropped a gear and opened it up and he didn't get more than a length or two ahead of me before I passed him. Once back at work his only comment was, "How many rpms were you doing?"

Seems like the x is the way to go for my lifestyle. Had a rust bucket civic that could crush most opponents, and I miss the look of shame and surprise when guys with shiny new toys got spanked!
