I'm about to replace the transmission output shaft seal on my (original owner) 1981 XJ550H. Does anyone know if the original factory seal was flanged in the same manner as was the left crankshaft seal. All current seals are without flanges, but I don't need any surprises. Chacal isn't sure and suggested I post this question to the forum. Any help would be appreciated!

What I mean by flanged is the outer circumference of the original crankshaft seal had a metal retaining flange that nestled in grooves machined into the crankcase halves, necessitating separating the halves to replace the seal. I just wanted to make sure the output shaft seal was not of this type. I do know Yamaha later changed the specification of the crankshaft seal to not have a retaining flange, making replacement much more strait forward. From all the information I've been able to gather, it appears my concerns are unwarranted. I was told long ago that Yamaha had the flanged seal because of their concern that the seal could be blown out by crankcase pressure if the crankcase were to be overfilled with oil. At least that's one story. Thanks for your input.

I think you're right. Time to get busy with the new seal. Thanks for the input. BTW, those case halves look pretty good. Glad I don't need them!
