I've grabbed some parts off parts bikes in my area there has never been a right side cover.

I've looked on evilbay (ebay) and searched the internet for a black side panel for an '82 xj650 with no luck

While the interwebs has thousands upon thousands of left panels for every year and nearly every color, I just want a black right side panel for my ride.

And i'm not going to pay $150+ for it like the only one I found on ebay..

Anybody out there got one or know of a site I should check?

Links or anything that's helpful is much appreciated

the right side panals from all xj's are sitting along side of the highways and byways waiting to be found by some lucky sob who will make a fortune selling them

Thanks for those links, I just don't see it as a $100 piece of plastic, even $59 is more than id like to spend for it lol

If that's the average going rate I guess I'll just have to wait for a parts bike in my area with one..

is there a reason the right side is always missing though?

most likely it is removed the most. the grommets that hold them get hard.
battery access. put a charging wire connector on it so you do not keep taking it off for the tender.
when the bike wont start it is the first panel off to check battery, jump across the solinoid.

you may do better looking for a parts bike that has one.

Exactly..... and the rest that aren't broken are the expensive ones to replace the broken ones.

We just suck it up and buy a replacement when needed

Battery is behind that cover on that bike.

Grommets are pretty reasonable to replace, chacal has them all and they fit like a glove. I replaced mine when I had sidecovers repainted and I'm not worried about the falling off. My Kaw has old grommets and the covers fall off if I look at them wrong.

Search for complete bikes... I found my right side cover (750 Seca) when a listing came up for complete bike for a few hundred dollars. I offered a decent price for a small pile of parts, and got the side cover included. He still had a mostly complete bike to sell, plus he already made 100$ and I had an undamaged side cover. Wrong color, but I'm OK with that.

Don't know if this will help but I have a set (right and left) of side covers for an 82 XJ 750. They are black and I have emblems to go on them. I am searching for a right side cover, red. Someone liked mine a whole lot.... I'm open to discussion on price, hell I'd take a straight trade....

I have a red right side cover, horrible condition. All three tabs are broken, paint is faded, cracked. It is on display in the garage, the only piece left from my first xj. If it goes, do I need to cancel my xjbikes membership?

I'll not go quietly into that night... some daring moderator will have to drag me out kicking and screaming. My revenge will be sweet. Do you prefer death by chocolate, or huggy suffocation? Sooo sweet!

If it's from an xj650 maxim, I'd be interested

I noticed that ad. I've actually been on contact with him. I wasn't that sure he was trustworthy since he didn't want to put them up on eBay despite his " great rating". He wanted a post office check. I would have sent it if he had been willing to match his Craigslist contact with his eBay but he wasn't willing. His CL ad for these covers has been up for a few months now. At that price they should have been sold by now.

    Hi guys,

First time poster; thank you for adding me to the group. I’ve spent the last 72 hours researching many things to death about my XJ650 Maxim I just picked up. Regarding the right panel that never seems to be listed for under $100, I may have found something new to some of you that may help you out. At least, I plan to try this route and I’ll post how it went. From what I can gather, the battery cover on the XJ700 from 1986 should fit, and the mounting points look the same. Cheers

Have you purchased one ? I have those same side covers and an XJ650 maxim frame I can confirm that before you spend the money.

I don't believe the 650 and the 700 panels are interchangeable

Definitely does not fit. Different size, different shape, different spread.

Thanks guys. No, I didn’t buy it yet as the shipping was going to be astronomical for just a piece of plastic. Looks like I was wrong. The tabs could probably be altered to make it fit though. Versus having a gaping hole.

You'd have to alter and relocate the tab as well as alter the shape
