    It's a nasty habit anyway.

What else I did today.... Polished the headers and collector box! Shiny exhaust.jpg

..... And just now.... Figured out how to plane the velo stacks to share some space. For all the challenges I'll face tuning with these, they are beautiful. The airbox will definitely be acrylic or polycarbonate. I wont be hiding these.

Yes, those are cool looking and will make for a tuning challenge if used w/o the stock airbox? Using them along with the stock airbox might pose some creative challenges.

Yes without. I'm building an airbox though. With proper volume calculated (once I get past the header plate design). I'm shooting for a resonant box. There will be a tunable length intake "pipe" involved. The hope is to wake up the bottom/midrange. You'll be hearing from me very soon about the carb part Len. And I'll likely be buying an array of both fuel, and even air jets from you. I am in the process of making a list of needs.

You need to swap #1 bowl with #3. But the v stacks look way cool. Did you want a picture of a floating brake rotor?

Today finally got out in the garage and painted my center stand and cleaned a bit . Since it is 38 degrees and my garage is not heated so did not stay out long. A couple of months ago I bought a complete xj750 seca brake calipers, master cylinder, brake manifold. Finally tore off the hoses and pitched , cleaned up calipers pistons look good and bleeder screws are free ...don't know what I'm going to do with them . Maybe Johnny Cash bike one piece at a time. I only bought this as I wanted a right hand control start switch this more than fit the bill .

Started my front end rebuild including a full brake system overhaul with new hoses and total fork rebuild with new progressive springs.

Got the forks off but managed to bugger up a large cap bolt on top of the right fork. Didn't have a large enough metric wrench, used a 15/16 wrench that worked fine on the left leg, but not so much on the right one. Hopefully Chacal carries replacements. Having trouble getting the dust seals out, probably just being too nice to them. I am very good at scratching things that need to be smooth.

Also decided to replace front wheel bearings while I have the wheel off.
Time to start looking through the Xj4ever catalogue again

Yesterday, although getting over the tail end of the Flu I was able to start the sanding of the Yamaha valve cover. By doing so this will make it stand out against the gloss black, followed by 3 coats of the clear coat.
received the lower 4-O-rings between the block and the Jug assembly along with 4 lower carb bowl gaskets and 4 new float assemblies from Chacal.
Still looking through garage for original XJ700 X air box-not looking good at the moment. Missing in the ABYSS of the garage.LOL:rolleyes:

Got my 650 out of the basement and back up to the garage.

    Comedy of errors:
    - Started well, but battery weak.
    - Had to drive through my neighbor's field to get to the road.
    - stalled 2 or 3 times trying to get from the field to the road, battery dead.
    - turned around to go down the hill in order to bump start. Got started!
    - turned around to head back up the hill to the road, got stuck.
    - Brother-in-law lends a push and I finally get up the garage.

Wish I hadn't spent so much time cleaning it before driving through a field...

    Now for new tires...

Um what did I do yesterday ? Started to polish the valve cover specifically the YAMAHA embossing and a few other little areas to make it shine. Once this is completed going to do a couple coats of Clear coat in hopes to maintain the luster.
When I get home I will order the Color Tune- off of amazon 2-3 should have it in hand.
Picked up clear tubing from hardware store going to make a MANOMETER- or at least start to
Start on the Exhaust Pipes since they are sitting unattached. Should make it a bit easier as I can move them around to my liking.
Wrist Pins and piston rings hopefully will be on there way from Japan (Wrist Pins).
All above can change in a moment by the words "Honey can you help me around the house?"

Bigger problem 82 vent no longer available and 83-86 vent hole 1mm bigger. Have to bore out to fit new one

Ok went around with Dremel wire wheel attachment and cleaned all bolt holes that are used for grounding. Clear coated the engine side covers 2 more coats to go. Ordered the Color Tune in 12mm from Chacal-7 -14 days till it arrives. Maybe Just Maybe the wrist pins and piston rings will get here first. This would allow me to begin the reassembly process;). Have to remember to check the valve clearances prior to start up. Goona make darn sure they are all in specs before I apply some spark to her. Tomorrow actual day off from work and school exhaust is nest.

Got the 2 nd coat of clear on the engine guards.
Replaced the floats and the little thing they go into, fuel bowl gaskets and replaced the fuel bowls into the right order. By this I mean so that the drain holes are all facing the outside. The shop I had do my carbs before placed two bowls facing towards the inside of the engine. Not allowing access to 1 and 4, you should be able to see this from the picture.

As long as it's the one for the X, and not the airhead----

    There IS difference....

    1. the boot holes for the X are 5.5cm vs. 5.0cm for the airhead.

    2. the X is smooth above the holes, the airhead has two nubs above each hole

    What did I do?

Weeell, just got off the phone with a guy--- I stumbled across my first bike.... the 650 maxim in my showcase-- we talked, I'm buying it back:) it has gone through two people since me, and has about 10k more on the odometer now. It has some bumps and bruises, but I can put it easily back to the condition it was when I had it, and then start pushing to the next level :)

Didn't think about using a degree wheel for setting the TDC.
I going to use Dial indicator gauge. Wonder is there any difference ?

The only difference is if you aren't familiar with how to set up a dial indicator. In that case a degree wheel is easier to use. They both work fine for that job.
For cam timing you need a degree wheel if the goal is to alter cam timing from stock, or you want to confirm that the cams really are opening and closing the valves at the correct time (not just looking at the timing marks, which only show you where things are at TDC).
Both tools are well worth having.

Well thanks for the tip. I am going to use the dial indicator to verify TDC as I am just setting things back to stock.
Stock was plenty enough when it was new, should be fine now.
Again thanks for responding to my questions.

A dowel stick in the spark plug hole can verify it too

Plan for this afternoon- tear apart carbs and verify that all jets are actually the same size. What I didn't do was check the float heights, then I read an article on cleaning the BS33 carbs that if you replace the old float valves with new you should check the float heights. Apparently the replacements are a bit longer then the originals.
Lesson prior to any type of work being done read all available information provided by those who have gone before you as there is pertinent information that will be revealed.
Paying homage to those who have gone before me and are probably having a good chuckle.
It is also still snowing here.

Dowski... you should ALWAYS Check float height after replacing the float valves and/or fuel valve needles. Yes, they can vary. The height you set it at is just putting them back to the factory initial height so that you "zero them out" before you do your final wet-setting.

What I am doing know is to stop and read all the information that I can gather from this website and from Xj4ever before I tackle any more adjustments and or replacing of parts. I am a novice or I know just enough to really foul things up in the realm of motorcycles. I appreciate the words of encouragement as I travel down this road of enlightenment along with the ribbing doesn't hurt much either:eek:.

So here I sit at my computer lazily looking over towards my work bench where my carbs sit awaiting my attention and my wife brings me in a package- I ask what it could be and she responds I am sure that it is for your other girlfriend as she chuckles and yes it is. This is what I like about ordering items from Len- four days from order to delivery.
I know have a Color Tune in 12mm and it is all mine :D eventually I will be able do the fine tuning of my XJ-:):) Whoop Whoop.
