What did you do to your Yamaha today?

    Ok went around with Dremel wire wheel attachment and cleaned all bolt holes that are used for grounding. Clear coated the engine side covers 2 more coats to go. Ordered the Color Tune in 12mm from Chacal-7 -14 days till it arrives. Maybe Just Maybe the wrist pins and piston rings will get here first. This would allow me to begin the reassembly process;). Have to remember to check the valve clearances prior to start up. Goona make darn sure they are all in specs before I apply some spark to her. Tomorrow actual day off from work and school exhaust is nest.

    Got the 2 nd coat of clear on the engine guards.
    Replaced the floats and the little thing they go into, fuel bowl gaskets and replaced the fuel bowls into the right order. By this I mean so that the drain holes are all facing the outside. The shop I had do my carbs before placed two bowls facing towards the inside of the engine. Not allowing access to 1 and 4, you should be able to see this from the picture.

    I have Found my original Air box!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:D:) For my Xj700X Whoot Whoot couldn't be happier right at the moment!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    As long as it's the one for the X, and not the airhead----

    There IS difference....

    1. the boot holes for the X are 5.5cm vs. 5.0cm for the airhead.

    2. the X is smooth above the holes, the airhead has two nubs above each hole

    What did I do?

    Weeell, just got off the phone with a guy--- I stumbled across my first bike.... the 650 maxim in my showcase-- we talked, I'm buying it back:) it has gone through two people since me, and has about 10k more on the odometer now. It has some bumps and bruises, but I can put it easily back to the condition it was when I had it, and then start pushing to the next level :)

    They came from a 1978 Suzuki GS 750. They are going on my Radian 600 motor.

    Didn't think about using a degree wheel for setting the TDC.
    I going to use Dial indicator gauge. Wonder is there any difference ?

    The only difference is if you aren't familiar with how to set up a dial indicator. In that case a degree wheel is easier to use. They both work fine for that job.
    For cam timing you need a degree wheel if the goal is to alter cam timing from stock, or you want to confirm that the cams really are opening and closing the valves at the correct time (not just looking at the timing marks, which only show you where things are at TDC).
    Both tools are well worth having.

    Well thanks for the tip. I am going to use the dial indicator to verify TDC as I am just setting things back to stock.
    Stock was plenty enough when it was new, should be fine now.
    Again thanks for responding to my questions.

    Plan for this afternoon- tear apart carbs and verify that all jets are actually the same size. What I didn't do was check the float heights, then I read an article on cleaning the BS33 carbs that if you replace the old float valves with new you should check the float heights. Apparently the replacements are a bit longer then the originals.
    Lesson prior to any type of work being done read all available information provided by those who have gone before you as there is pertinent information that will be revealed.
    Paying homage to those who have gone before me and are probably having a good chuckle. :rolleyes:

    Dowski... you should ALWAYS Check float height after replacing the float valves and/or fuel valve needles. Yes, they can vary. The height you set it at is just putting them back to the factory initial height so that you "zero them out" before you do your final wet-setting.

    What I am doing know is to stop and read all the information that I can gather from this website and from Xj4ever before I tackle any more adjustments and or replacing of parts. I am a novice or I know just enough to really foul things up in the realm of motorcycles. I appreciate the words of encouragement as I travel down this road of enlightenment along with the ribbing doesn't hurt much either:eek:.

    So here I sit at my computer lazily looking over towards my work bench where my carbs sit awaiting my attention and my wife brings me in a package- I ask what it could be and she responds I am sure that it is for your other girlfriend as she chuckles and yes it is. This is what I like about ordering items from Len- four days from order to delivery.
    I know have a Color Tune in 12mm and it is all mine :D eventually I will be able do the fine tuning of my XJ-:):) Whoop Whoop.
