i have an 82 xj750 maxim when I bought the bike it has a 2 into 1 exhaust for both sides and has pod filters and I just recetly resealed the upper end due to an oil leak but I have been doing some reading on this form site. And seeing how everyone dislikes the pods the factory air box is gone so was wondering what should have been done to the carbs to fix the poping on decel I think it has factory jetting if I could get some pointers that would be great

All right another Hoosier , try to purchase another stock airbox (eBay) ...if carbs are set up right it has loads of power and no popping or spiting and you will not have to keep changing jets. My carbs have been to church and synched correctly with stock airbox have not touched carbs since no popping ,back firing, idle is 1100rpm , Yes I do my own work , been wrenching since I was 14 riding since I was 14 too and now at 50 I still love to ride.

I can't speak for "everyone"; here is my .02:
I don't dislike pods - they certainly look cool. I embrace the technology of the early 80's and realize that Yamaha made a very efficient little powerhouse with their stock air box - 'if it ain't broke don't fix it'.
Some people have put pods on either by choice or by necessity (unobtainable airbox) some of these people suffer greatly a few of these people persevered and were successful in dialing in an acceptable performance of their machines.
My understanding is that pods require a lot of tweaking depending on a lot of variables - an airbox setup pretty much will work only one way.

The popping on deceleration can be an indicator of a lean condition. Check for vacuum leaks first.

Rejetting with just pods (stock exhaust) requires a minimum of a +2 bump to both pilot and main fuel jets. You will have a flat spot in the midrange.

    Xj550h,
That air box that you linked looks like it's missing something to attach it to the carbs are the boots from the air box to carbs still available?

^^^^ what he said not my sales yes the boots would be a seperate purchase most of the time even a set of new ones and the airbox would be cheaper than most add on filters and pods
