i have an xj 700 air model. I like the look of the xj700x carb covers and that gave me an idea. I want to sketch my own carb covers in a 3d program and then print them. I can print up to 6in by 6in. The plastic has a melting point of 190 degree Celsius. Do you think there is to much heat in this area to make this possible. I want to make sure this will work before i put all this time into designing it. Thanks

If your carbs got that hot the fuel would boil. Take a piece of that plastic and wire it to the manifolds and see if they deform. You could use a piece of foil backed heat shield to protect the inside

the covers are critical to the spring and its compression when diaphrams are in motion.

maybe you can make a cover for the covers

I think he's talking about the side covers that cover the intake along the side of carbs

Buy a cheap digital IR temp gun from ebay. Got mine for about $10. After a hard ride on a hot day, measure the temperatures in that area.

The front engine areas on my XJ550 are upwards around 250F (280F on exhaust pipe connection flanges -the IR meter wont' read correctly on the chrome exhaust) on a hot day, so I'm guessing behind the carbs it will be lower.

Yeah... I think he means the chrome 5-Valve covers that cover the carb-to-manifold boots on the MaximX

This topic interests me as well - I'm lacking one of my 5 valve covers - and bying them used is almost impossible (or too expensive..).

Maxim X website have actually made an 3D obj. file of the right carb cover. Have no idea if the cover have the correct form factor (but looks like it).

(Have not made enough posts to be able to link to the file, but google "Maxim X" - go to "NOTES" and "unpublished archives" and "Covers/")

Thanks I found that 3d model. I am talking about carb and intake boot covers. I think I can design them so they attach the same way the covers do so would that the same pressure is on the diaphragm cap. Would that work? I want to start drawing them up in the next week.

The easiest way fo us to give an opinion is for you to put up a rendering or sketch to look at so we're clear on what youre doing.

Yep - I still am not sure what cover is being discussed here. Quite certain it is NOT the side covers . . . Nor the airbox cover. Carb and intake boot cover that puts pressure on the diaphgrams??? Color me dumbfounded. Then again, I only know my XJ650 Maxim and that's it.

I get which covers, but I'm not seeing how he wants to attach them to the bike.

That's a lot of those . . . Are they cosmetic or a functional component?

    Both.
    Cosmetic: They look cool.
    Functional: They helped sell motorcycles.
