I'm a new member and a fairly new owner of a 82 xj750 maxim I picked the bike up from the original owner for $500 the bike had say in his garage for 30 years so it's been neglected but it's not in cosmeticly bad shape but does need a full carb rebuild and valve adjustment as well as oil change and other maintenance. What really struck me is how low the miles are (in my opinion) the bike only has 7899.8 original miles. Is this unusual? What's your odometer reading?

    Welcome to the clan.
Finding bikes like that is not as uncommon as you might think. And that is low miles for a bike of that era. I have 4 bikes that are like that. An 81 CB900c purchased from original owner with 6900 kilometres, it only has 8100 kilometeres now, a 73 Rd 200 with 2400 miles one owner, a 73 Ct70 one owner 870 miles, a 69 z50a from Britain with speedo and street legal with 504 miles one owner. On the other end I have an 84 Xj750rl with 99,000 kilometres, my xj650rjc has 54,000 kilometres.

    51k miles.
There are two schools of thought on low mileage vehicles. A bike that sits static for 30 years isn't (to me) as favorable as one that gets a few ticks put on her every year. Flip side, a bike that sits static for along time should look a lot prettier than mine and has less wear and tear on it. Still need to replace old brittle rubber parts.

Yeah I know there is major flaws to be anticipated with anything that sits that long hence why mine isn't running yet but seals and rubber parts are easy to replace for a teen who enjoys working on engines. I just have in interest to hear stories of bikes with low miles like mine or even lower. As Soon as mine is running right and safe I'm not to put some miles on it for sure

I have two bikes at the moment, both 1982 XJ750s. One has just over 14K miles and the other has about 34K miles. I have seen plenty that are low mileage, just depends if the previous owner was really into riding or just bought it on a whim. I've only put 800 miles on my primary bike (the one that has 34K miles). The secondary doesn't get used and isn't registered. It needs a carb rebuild and brakes, and I simply don't have time to work on it this year.

27k miles. Original owner. For many years I only put a "few ticks" on it each summer to get a tank of fresh non-alcohol gas through it, oil change, etc. As a result it has stayed in pretty good shape, but I recent years have been doing neglected maintenance, esp. since rubber parts tend to not age well (brake lines, seals, etc).

I have an 82 Maxim as well. My odometer is sitting at 26003 right now. I anticipate many more miles ahead for it.

I have 3 XJ1100 two of them have more than 50,000 miles each on them (exact is unknown). the last one I picked up had only 4,390 miles on it (that was two years ago). The bike sat for 20 years because of a nasty divorce. He didn't want his ex to get the bike so he slashed the tires and threw a cover on the bike. It sat in a heated garage until he gave it to his son. His son didn't want to fix it, he wanted something to ride right now. so I traded him my 83 Venture for the 82 XJ1100. I think I got the better end of the deal. I now have 9,000+ miles on the bike.

Mine states 7667. I hoestly don't know if it is entirely accurate. Hadn't been registered since 1994. The tires had date codes of the late 80's and still had significant tread. Dry-rot everywhere though. So, I have reason to believe that it may be. When I spoke with the PO, his brother bought it new, rode it a little, then went off to the Navy. After sitting several years, transferred to his brother, the PO, who rode it for a few years in the early 90s. She sat a long time, and unfortunately, much of that outside, so she wasn't pretty either. That is why I am going through nearly every system and replacing nearly any fluid, lubricant, or rubber piece that may have degraded over the years. I can dress her up later.

It's cool to hear all these stories, I know its a shame this bike hasn't been enjoyed but the way I look at it it's an opportunity for me to enjoy a bike just like new just as it would have been in 1982. I'm 19 so I never got to enjoy these bikes new but now its my chance. Believe me when my finances are online I'll have this bike back on the road and I anticipate tens of thousands of miles out of it

    I had a '69 Honda CB160, and a' 71 Honda CB450, both with >8,000 miles, that I traded for my '80 XJ650 with 6,554 miles on it in 2012.

Current mileage on the xj is 17,686 :D

Did exhaust headers, couple oil changes, cleaned and set bowl floats and jets (Replaced two needles), and gear oil. Oh and one rear tire.

Right now running like a champ so far :)

Brakes / master cylinder? No matter how well it runs, you absolutely must be able to stop.

There are many ways to stop, but only one that's desirable.

Both sets pad / shoes inspected... and it already had the replacement stainless lines up front so I figure I'm good for the moment....
