    Hello all!

When I start my 550 max cold the bike really wants to die when I hit the throttle on full choke. If I wait a bit the bike runs pretty good. Carbs are good. Everythings been done. Manifolds newer. All the parts from chacal.

I have synced but not colortune yet.

I'm thinking bad gas possible or a low idle.

My gauges are also a bit of a issue. They were worked last time I was on the freeway but at idle the rpm's stop working. I've lubed both but nothing.

    Idk tho. Any thoughts?

Church good? Honest to goodness kneeling at the pew clean AND rebuilt?

Seems that doing the colortune and a final sync should help.

Are you letting the bike warm up?

what he said bike needs a little time to warm you should not need to open throttle at all to start bike.
depending on weather by time you have your helmet on and gloves the bike will respond to throttle colder just wait until the rpms start to climb

Mine does this too, and I always assumed it was normal. My (absolutely incomplete) understanding is that due to this not actually being a choke, it works differently than you may expect with a traditional choke.

When cold, zero throttle, start at full choke and drop down a bit, use the choke lever as a throttle. I find (with my Maxim anyways) that there's a specific amount of lever pull it likes to start at for a given temperature. Then use the lever to adjust RPM's while warming up - still no throttle. After it's warmed, RPM's will start climbing - reduce choke to keep idle where it's supposed to be. If you're going to start riding before it's really warmed up, close the choke to ~1/3 or all the way before giving it any throttle.

My idle is set to ~1200 (it just runs smoother there), and it's always been like that - seems very normal - over 5k ridden on it this season.

So, choke is, as far as I know, completely normal. Choke+throttle=bad. Just don't use both.

Is the tach cable or electronic?

Not really.... My last bike responded right away when I hit the throttle after the bike was running for a couple seconds. This one just wants to die when I try to give it any gas. Starts right up tho.

I only open the throttle after the bike has started and has been running for a few seconds.

After 3-4 mins the bike responds as it should. Guess I'll leave it be when starting for a few.

Also, it's usually in the mid 80's when starting.

As always thanks for the info!

When it's in the mid-80's you should need to use the choke at all!

    Shouldn't?

    That's the problem.

I haven't been out on this bike much. I just finished getting all the lights to work properly.

Yeah, only need choke on cold starts, and even then you can ride pretty quick just close the choke before you give it throttle.

Don't need to give it minutes; even when cold it'll heat up pretty fast.

Right now, even in the coolish summer morning, mine starts immediately with a press of the starter and a small blip of throttle, no choke.

How long has the gas sat in the tank?
    Are the sparkplugs new?

Sorry for the delay. I was out of town with no internet or phone service (which was great) for a while.

The gas was sitting for at least 6 months. Drained it a few weeks ago before I left and got fresh gas today. Unfortunately I didn't have time to test it today. Maybe tomorrow.

I want to swap tanks and petcocks before I fill her up again tho. It came with a rust free tank much nicer tank then I originally had.

I'll report back once I get that taken care of.

Note to self... When installing a new fuel filter make sure its done right. Seemed to fix the problem. Although I did get new gas so I'm going with that as my problem. :D

Bubbles in the fuel filter can cause all sorts of annoying problems. Been down that road a few times over the years... Either just not flowing correctly, leaking, or my personal favourite:

Air bubbles that can get trapped inside, which then due to engine heat expand and restrict fuel flow... Bike runs fine, then when it gets hot, and an air bubble gets in there, suddenly you get an inconsistent falter when under heavy load. Good times.
