Hi everyone, this is my first post in this forum. I've just acquired a 89 xj900 the carbs are on there last legs, I read some where that Mukunis of a fj1200 would fit? I also have a set of Fzr1000 Mukunis laying around. Would any of these fit?

    Thanks in advance

Rebuild what you have. I've never seen a XJ carb body wear out, and you'll need to rebuild whatever you replace them with anyway.

They might FIT, but they probably won't WORK...
With a lot of tinkering, swapping and frustration, maybe------

I guess that's what I'm sort of asking, is there better choice? Or are the stock ones the best.

best choice is to use the correct carbs and do a 'THOROUGH cleaning/rebuild. The Yammy engineers knew what they were doing with the XJ platform.

If you REEEEAAALLLYYY want to try tinkering, here's a thread.......

Rebuild what you have. Throwing money at another used set is pointless, unless you plan on rebuilding both sets in order to have a spare rack.
Start a conversation with Chacal for the parts you need.

Still haven't told us what's wrong with the carbs... If you mean the seals are on their last legs, replacement kits can be purchased. If they're dirty, they can be cleaned.

But shipping from...and back to...the U.K. would be extremely high, I'd expect.

It shouldn't cost much more than $100 U.S. round-trip. Less than the cost of a replacement carb rack that needs to be rebuilt.

I have always used http://www.nrp-carbs.co.uk/ for all my carb supplies and repairs. Andy, who runs the shop knows exactly what he's talking about.
    I've repaired XS1100, XJ1100, FJ1200, FJ1100, XJ600, etc etc. Give them a call.

This kinda caught my attention. I would really want to get rid of the airbox on my xj400 4v7 (basically a 550 with smaller stroke and bore, EU/japan only if i am not mistaken) but after reading up a bit i realized that the CV carbs seem pretty useless with pods (or similar). Has anyone successfully swapped them out for some more conventional carbs? Mind you i am primarily an injection car guy. My knowledge of carbs basically comes from motocross bikes and lawn mowers.

Apparently Mikuni made a rack of RS series carbs for the FZ600 when they were current super sports. They will have the correct spacing to fit your 400. If you can actually find some I think the price will be dear.
It's a 400, why not just ride it for what it is?

Yup.....you're not gonna get a ride like a 750 or a 900 out of it......
Want more power? Get a bigger XJ. They all handle and feel different. Each one is unique. That's coming from one of the guys here who has waaay more than 1.

Trust me, i get that. I am planning on riding it as is and not really looking for more power (technically, i won't be legally allowed to ride anything with more than 35 kw until next year anyway, and the 400 has 34kw). The carb swap would purely be for looks and maybe a bit of induction noise. It is not a big deal though as I think the bike will look good even with the stock airbox. :)

Ummm.....these are gas powered, so I think you mean hp, not kw........ Unless you converted it to electric---in which case who cares if you have pods or an airbox. Heck, you could pull the airbox AND the carb rack off. Lol

Most other countries cite power output in KW. Both standards are applicable. Watts is useful because it is a standard SI unit (base 10), and just as easy to work with and convert as grams, liters, or meters.

Yeah, 1kw is 1.36hp, Hence the koenigsegg one:1 is a "megacar" with 1mw of power, which is 1360 hp. To make things worse, Sweden hasn't fully decided on what to use. All laws are in kw since we are a "metric country" but we usually say hp, which means that most swedish sites posts both hp and kw since kw is technically the official way to quote power while most of the population feel more at home with hp. Standards, right.

Also, here in Sweden we often quote distances in "mil", which sounds similar to mile (obviously) but is far from. One "swedish mile" or "mil" is 10km. If you ever visit sweden and someone who isn't all too good at english says "it is about a mile away" it is not walking distance. Unless a bit over 6 miles is a nice walk for you ;)

Glad I live in the least regulated state in the USA. For anything over 50cc, one license - I can drive them all!

    Where can I get a 1mw motorcycle????

Apparently it means a few things:
    1. a unit of length equal to 0.001 of an inch (0.0254 mm), used in measuring the diameter of wires.

    2. a military unit of angular measurement equal to the angle subtended by 1/6400 of a circumference.
    3. (less accurately) the angle subtended by an arc equal to 1/1000 (0.001) of the radius or distance.

    4. (used formerly in pharmaceutical prescriptions) a milliliter.

    5. a former bronze coin of the mandate of Palestine, the 1/1000 part of a pound.
