Rode to work this morning as mentioned prior- FOG was a big issue ice formed on my visor which I need to ask how do ya'll keep your visor from freezing up?
    Cars not running their headlights!
Road was fine or at least I didn't notice any significant icing issues.
Really paid a lot of attention to the painted lines on the road and manhole covers. Good Times :)

Thankfully, it's absurdly dry here, so no ice - no moisture in the air to freeze.

My friend at work wears a modular helmet as well. He likes his a lot, I just keep thinking about how strong is the lower chin guard.
Guess some good ol fashioned research would answer that question.
Thank You for the suggestion about using a modular Helmet.

Snell will not provide any safety information regarding modular helmets. They don't even perform tests on them, as they don't have standards for the modular helmets. They (and I) feel that they are inherently weaker by design than full face models.

What I've read and heard from some safety people is that the protection based on the helmet style is what you'd expect. Full face provides the most protection, then modular, then 3/4 with a face shield, then, 3/4 without a face shield, then half helmets.

The advice I follow is to focus on fit, since I won't want to wear an uncomfortable helmet.

    They're so cool ;)

Don't forget to resync your engine after monkeying with the AFM - I prefer to do it at the same time, as when you get cylinders burning better they create more power, which gets things out of balance. It's amazing what a small difference can do.

Washed the XJ(Gasp!), then took her out for a ride to dry off. Doesn't like being washed, always runs terribly for a little bit afterwards. Not sure if it's an electrical issue, or pulling some water into the carbs, but any time I hose her down she runs like crap for a couple miles.

Not too concerned, though - cleans up once everything's dry.

Got 6 inches of snow yesterday but today was 45' so I went for first ride after colortune. Wow, what a difference it made having it dialed in right in how she's running. The $100 baby is running like a Swiss watch.

When you wash it, do you spray up towards the underside of the seat? I'm curious where it could be getting in.

No. Hose nozzle is always higher than the seat, careful to avoid spraying it into the air intake. Not sure, really. Maaaaaybe around the intake boots where they join the air box. They seat the carbs really well, but I doubt they're sealing to the airbox.

Not sure if it's pulling water in, or maybe a spark plug wire is shorting to water pooled on top of the engine.

Symptoms are - decreasing severity as it warms/dries - a bogging under load. Riding really gently is ok, but it starts missing it you give it too much throttle.

This doesn't happen while riding in the rain, or really any other time.

I'm not power sparying either - I use a spray bottle with simple green, wipe down with microfiber cloth, then rinse with a hose (no sprayer). There's a large volume of water, but low pressure.

Could be a crack in a plug wire cover allowing moisture in, but it seems odd that it doesn't happen in the rain.

Sounds like a wet coil, or wet plug wire, but have also seen issues with wet TCI's

modular helmets are easier for the Emt to remove they do not have to cut them off like a full face helmet.
I was wearing a 3/4 with face shield when I had my accident ,managed to remove it myself because any ride that ends with you removing your own helmet is a good one;);) was all that was running through my mind.
. I have a whole new face, cheeks replaced/repaired eye sockets temple to temple plate thet goes over the top of my skull and another plate/mesh across the top of my skull screws up through the top of my mouth into skull to hold it together , broken jaw . lip and nose still numb top of skull you can pull my hair and I do not feel it. I wonder how I would have made out with full face (which I wear now) they are so uncomfortable o_O to wear. Safety trumps comfort ALL DAY LONG.
many other injuries I will not list because the injuries do not involve helmets.
All in a days ride :)

I miss the days when I was reluctantly putting my gloves on for safety. Now I am putting them on so my fingers don't freeze.

Gear is so expensive here I don't really have proper winter gear. Just some rain pants, a scarf, and more layers under my jacket. I only have a 20 minute ride to/from work but I still freeze my ass off.

I'd love to have proper gear, but that stuff's expensive.

Instead, I just wear more "gear". Check out my cold weather riding gloves:

    20171214_091313.jpg

Yeah baby. $5 Home Depot Husky work gloves (my normal riding gloves) plus hilariously oversized knit mittens on top of them. Ride in this morning at -4 was still hard on the fingers, though. Probably didn't help that I did 160 the whole way ;)

Then a tee-shirt, sweater, fleece hoody, and parka on top keeps the body warm, and ensures an accident at that speed probably won't cause any harm!

I rode in a hurricane once in South Carolina back in 76. I've ridden in all kinds of weather but you won't catch me riding in a hurricane again. Don't know what the wind speed was but I can tell you it was like riding on the high seas without the up and down motion of a ship. I rode into wave after wave of walls of cold water and roaring wind. After about 2 hours of this I decided it wasn't going to let up and I was going to be killed. So I turned around and headed south. The further south I went the clearer the skies got. When the adrenaline quit the chills set in and I stopped for a hot coffee. Suddenly It was a beautiful night. So I finished my coffee and hopped onto the bike and headed north again. I made it all the way to Columbia, South Carolina. The weather was beautiful like I was riding in a different world. As I sat waiting at a traffic light I got rear ended by a doctor in a Triumph sports car.

I would definitely win shrinkage. I used to ride in the winter. I had a bike set up for it at that time. That road salt really takes a toll on the bike. But man o man a New Years ride in MinneSNOWda?? Wooo Hooo!

So came home temp was in upper 40's had not touched bike for awhile , other than tender . So cranked bike it caught a few times but still would not catch so got my bigger charger out and hooked it up , finally started ..sort of went to open throttle and she died , played with enrichment lever still coughing and THEN it happened the starter stuck hit kill switch no effect shut off key no effect...ran to get wrench to pull battery cable ..bike is against wall in my garage ...she finally quit without me doing anything else ...had I thought about it guess pulling the fuse would have stopped it. Recharged battery over night and bike cranks over fine , but I'm going to replace start solenoid as precaution . I don't want to move bike as I have it positioned in garage just right so I will wait till spring to mess with it. :(

Anyone here NOT put away their baby for the winter ? I thought I was going to this season ( first winter with a bike) but I've decided to continue doing what I've been doing ; riding when the roads are clear and it's 30' or higher. Happy with this decision because I don't think i could have made it having to wait until spring

Mine technically isn't put away...however, with all of the salt they have been dumping on the roads for all of the snow we're not getting so even when the temps get back into a range that I would ride, I don't because of all the salt and sand on the roads

Definitely winter in this part of the cheesehead state...
I made sure that the tape was in place covering my mufflers - still need to get barn cats.

When I was in Milwaukee riding in cooler temps was more attainable- but I recall a few times with temps in the lower 30's where the pavement that appeared dry actually had a bit of frost on it. Pucker factor high!

    Be careful out there!

Battery is out, carbs run dry-ish, cover is on, all tucked away in the back corner of the garage. I can get it on the road in less than 20 minutes if the temperature ever gets up above -20. Fingers not crossed...

    Canadians generally run on Celsius. -20 C is about -4 F .

    Just plain old COLD.
Winter - put some layers on, split more wood and watch the days start to get longer. Dream of dry, salt/ sand free roads and buds on shrubs.

I was flying down the hiway doing about 160k thinking how well she was running. I pulled off the hiway and the engine started to bog down and started running on 2 cylinders. Ended up throwing it in the back of the van and driving it home. I dont know if I was imagining it but I may have smelt a burning wire.

Mines covered right now, as it's -20C currently and there's a foot of snow outside, but the moment roads are fully clear and dry I'll be on the XJ again. She certainly doesn't get put away, and hell I don't even pull the battery. Battery tender and cover, stabilizer in the (now ethanol free, thanks to the local Shell station's silly "nitro v-power" gas) fuel and that's about that. I leave the carbs full of gas, mostly because draining them is incredibly awkward, and also because it never goes more than a two weeks without at least being started and run up to temp for a while so the fuel is always cycled.

No, too much Christmas going on right now. I'm just happy its sitting at home and not on the side of the road. Hoping I'll have time to take a look sometime between now and New Years but I may be being optimistic.
