Looking to trade my 82 XJ650 maxim for a larger 80’s Japanese bike. This xj is currently on the road and has a clear title. I expect that the trade will need a little work. Thanks

    Boston area

Has anyone ever ridden one of those cb900 customs with the 9 or 10 speed automatic transmission? How the heck does that work out?

That's one of my fleet. Got that bike in 1997 from original owner with 6900 kilometres on it.
5 speed trans with a 2 speed sub transmission. It's about a 10% difference low range city/ 2 up, high range for Hwy riding. When I sold them new back in the day many saw it as a bit of a gimmick but after a test ride for about 1/2 an hour people were sold. Hondaline colour matched fairing, bags , trunk , radio engine guards etc they cost as much as a goldwing interstate.
Impossible to wheelie without a passenger.

I'll bet in the Boston area there are lots of early 80s super bikes. Big population= lots of old bikes in back of garages.
Don't count on many of them actually running. Sell the maxim and get an old shafty for a few hundred bucks.
