Good timing Dave! There's been a lot of CNYCC chatter lately. Depending on how my schedule goes, I might bring the Rebel to show you guys how easy valve adjustments can be!

 

I'm in. Just have to figure out how I'm getting 2 XJ's to the clinic this year. The $15 U-haul isn't going to cut it.

 

Didn't you rent a truck last year too?

 

Truck was mine. Trailer was a U-Haul Rental. It is literally $15 per 24/hr. Good deal.

 

One bike in truck bed and one in trailer?

 

My Silverado has a short box which means if I put a bike back there, I have to ride with the tailgate down. Not sure how that will work with a trailer in tow as well...

Good Idea though.

I tried to get the bike up in there once by myself... Ramp, winch chained into the bed, etc... half way up the ramp, you realize how high you are and it gets scary.

 

Yeah doing it yourself can get a bit hairy....how small is the bed in your Silverado? I use my aunt's Dodge Dakota when I can't barrow her trailer.... As long as there isnt any high spots that would hit you should be fine to do that with the truck and trailer. Hey where there's a will there's a way! When I brought my bike down to where I live now from my storage unit ( 4 hours away) I hauled it INSIDE my old minivan! Took mirrors off, took seats out and jammed in front passenger seat and laid my bike down and slid it in the back hatch! Luckily there were no fluids in it to leak out!

Perfect fit in my opinion!

 

I still haul a lot of things that way... mini bike, go kart, lawn mower, snow blower, motorcycle lift table, etc

 

2 months away now!

So, time to start getting things finalized.

If there is a topic that you wish to learn about, a technique of skill that you wish to demonstrate, or specific issues you wish to have addressed on your bike, start letting me know so I can make suitable arrangements for who-can-work-on-what......what parts may be needed, get tools arranged, etc.......the usual carb clinic stuff here.

Really, I would just want to do some fine tuning... maybe check and grease final drive...
What I REALLY want is for a few people that have ridden XJs a lot to ride my bike and tell me if every little noise I hear actually means something or no worries....

 

Depends on the trailer really. When I used to ride dirtbikes I had a short box Silverado as well, I just popped the tailgate off and left it at home when I had two or even three bikes back there.

 

Trailer it up, I'd be more than willing to do that for you

Funny you should say this. I had Hogfiddles do exactly that for my bike at my first carb clinic. It got his thumbs up!

Looking forward to this year's trip. I'll be replacing the entire front brake system on the 700n. Calipers are rebuilt and ready, Master Cylinder is rebuilt and ready to go as well... I'll have the new stainless braided lines from Len @ XJ4ever to bring it all together.

 

Let me be the first to say that it is officially ONE month away! Final round of goodies from Len should be arriving on my doorstep today as well!

HA HA! In all honestly, I was thinking that as I was driving (yes, driving not riding... Had to haul some things that just won't fit on the bike) to work today. "Gotta beat Hogfiddles to the thread update!"

Most likely hauling bike in back of my truck so I can bring tools.
Unless weather forecast is perfect and I manage to get some side carriers on my bike for tent and sleeping bag

Extreme novice here. Just joined this thread as I purchased a 82 Maxim 550 as my first motorcycle. I had the local shop do the little bit of work it needed to get me riding, so I'll admit I've done none of my own wrenching so far. Would love to come and meet up with other XJ riders and learn some stuff so I can do my own work in the future. I'm coming from Ithaca.

Can't decide whether I'm more excited about being around bikes all day or to have that weekend without family and kids.

 

If the post man doesn't stop delivering goodies to my door step, I might have to make a request that the carb clinic be 2 days long. There's only so much you can do in one day.

 

I see you got fork oil, going to be doing your forks too huh?

 

I did forks ( complete with progressive springs) two carb clinics ago on the 700n... I’ll be putting the new front brakes on this year and an oil change, etc...

The plan as it stands right now is to bring my RJ as well because why bring one XJ when you can bring two!

The fork oil is for the RJ. I have a feeling there isn’t any oil in the fork tubes. She has trouble on rough pavement. I suspect the prior, prior owner drained it because the seals might have been leaking... no oil, no leak! Hey, we fixed the leak! Makes sense.

I’d like to take a peek inside and drain/fill with fresh oil to see what happens...

 

Gotta admire that logic!

I say the PRIOR, prior owner because I believe if the guy I bought the bike from knew about it, he would have told me... it’s just a feeling I get. He didn’t ride it far to work every day (literally just up the road) and honestly, those CT roads were pretty darn good around his house...

Funny how I clean my old bikes while the brand-new one hasn't seen a wipe since I got her.

Ordered a mini rack for my bike yesterday to easily attach stuff for the trip to Dave's - in case the weather looks great next weekend and I decide to ride instead of hauling.

 

Hmmmm-- motorcycle riding wives, and car fixing wives...... interesting concepts.

 

Better get our sunshine dance moves on. Still hoping to get a few hundred miles on my bike next weekend. Weather forecast doesn't convince me yet.

Tested my setup as well in case I'm not riding up there...
3 inches too long for tailgate to close
Not sure I am adventurous enough to place bike diagonal, tying it down would be a mother...

 

Diagonal is no problem . It's actually more secure because the wheels are anchored into the corners. Use four straps anyway. i've done it many times

 

Getting it up into the truck bed is the scary part.
