Hey guys, on Thursday, I took a bit of a spill on the Rebel... Fracture in the right arm just below the shoulder, plates n screws installed yesterday. Also a break in the left hand. Looks like I'll be riding the couch for the next couple of months. And cautiously enjoying opioids. Yup, should be a productive summer.

Owie. Careful with the meds. Those things are good, but can be too good sometimes.
Ask the doc if he can install an internal throttle lock so you'll always have it no matter what bike you ride.

My right hand was partially crushed (thankfully no breaks on the x-ray, but the doc said there were probably micro-fractures all over).
I got lucky and was able to manage the pain with Alieve and meditation (and making sure to not bump my hand against anything hard, like the bedsheets).
That was 20 years ago. I still have to do the PT exercises to keep it useable, and it still hurts most days.

My wife and I are having serious discussions about selling it. I have 2 young kids to think about, and we feel like we dodged a bullet here. I don't know if I want to risk it anymore... I am holding off on deciding until the drugs are done.

    And another thing.
A few months ago I was involved in what could have been a fatal accident.
Some [redacted] turned left in front of me on the highwhy while I was going 75 MPH. It was dark, and he nad no headlights. He was mabe traveling 15 MPH as he made the turn.
I braked hard, and had to run into the oncoming lane to avoid the vehicle, and managed to miss him by about a foot, still traveling fast enough for a collision to be very bad news.

    The point?

    I was driving my Jeep.
    Life is dangerous.

Several years ago I had my first accident ...3am going a little to fast coming into a sharp S turn ..that had been cut out and filled with gravel I was on my Buel Blast 500 . Next thing I knew I was down , my helmet had a chunk missing st the temple area the face shield looked like it had been put on a grinder. I use gel gloves , but 2 small chunks on both knuckles and my jacket was torn , my left knee felt like jello. But I was more worried about my bike ...broke off my aftermarket HD foot peg and scratched windshield and scraped side frame and the forward motor mount was torn . I fixed it and healed bought a new full face helmet this spill this is one reason I wear a full face helmet . I have rode since I was 14 I'm 51 now ..Matti don't give up on riding just be careful.

after hitting a moose with my bike everyone asked me if i was still going to keep riding. My answer was did not stop driving my car when I hit a moose would you.

I accept the fact that I am a moose magnet. the other day a moose stepped out in front of me in the afternoon and stood in the road , I had 200 feet to stop this time not 10 feet. He did not move until I rolled up to him and sounded my horn, then he just walked a way.
I no longer ride at night due to the moose population:(. love night riding clear stare light nights with no moon

I got hit last October and it could’ve been a lot worse. We have kids too but decided that we will both keep riding. Your time is up when it is regardless of what you are doing, might as well enjoy life. No way I’m letting one idiot wreck my love for riding. Don’t rush the decision to ride or to sell. Took me 8 months to decide to ride again and rebuild. Heal up and park the bike, it’ll be ready when you are.

I was looking at a girl on the sidewalk. Someone stopped ahead of me to turn left. I locked up both brakes (I know, nearly impossible on a Rebel, but I did it). Low side, pinned under the bike sliding for a bit.
And she wasn't even impressed. What's the point of bikes if a move like that can't catch her eye?
But seriously, wife was already terrified with me on two wheels, now she's in tears just thinking about it.
Also, my finances are pretty tight, so what I am going to get from short term disability isn't going to cut it. Selling it may become a necessity.

Sorry to hear about your spill, and wish you a fast recovery. Glad it wasn't worse.

I bought my XJ in 1985 a month before our wedding. We rode together for the first two years. Then we had children. I was a minister at the time and buried 4 people in two years killed on motorcycles. I don't think my wife has been on the motorcycle since before 1990.

My only close calls, with the exception of a cow running in front of me, have all been the fault of someone else.

Everyone, drive sanely, drive aware, and watch out for the other guy. For you and your families sake, wear a helmet, even in states where it isn't required.

And stop looking at girls on the sidewalk.......

Seriously though Matti, put it into storage, the kids will grow up, finances will get better, and a load of other things will make you want to wheel it out when the sun shines. It might as well be on an xj...

Matti just know we support your decision BUT finances might improve some where down the road and if you keep the bike you can fix it as time goes by . Selling it well there are 2 bikes I have owned wish I had never sold them my beloved 84 Kawasaki 550 LTD ( rare shaft driven) and my 82 CB750 custom ...call it sellers remorse . There will be a time where you will ask "why did I sell it" or "I wish I still had it" .....I know I do . Yes Wives have ALOT to do with these decision just tell her (in your mind) I'm keeping it ..if she says it is either me or the bike "I'm going to miss her" love my bike lol

Matti, that Rebel will never be worth more than it is right now. It's not going to get collectable, just older. Your next bike should be something the kids can drive.
how bad is the Rebel ?

It is scraped up and has the tank dent that all Rebels get. Some brave souls rode it to my house for me, so I know that everything works. Beyond checking it out after I dropped it, I haven't looked at it. For all I know, the key might still be in the ignition. I am on some hella powerful drugs, so sometimes it is hard to tell if I'm awake or asleep. To be honest, the bike is not powerful enough or large enough, and it definitely isn't an xj, so I was already planning to replace it. Now I have to decide if that's what is happening, or if I'm done. Biking has been my dream since the 90s, so it'll be pretty tough to drop.

it is easier to repair and ride again someday then replace the bike,, then to sell the bike then buy another a few years from now.

Dilaudid (hydromorphone), not oxy. Same shirt, different laundry pile. Nightmares and constipation. Also, how is it possible to have both drowsiness and insomnia as side effects?

Just be careful Matti. As I'm sure you know that stuff is basically pharmaceutical heroin and super easy to get addicted to. I wish you the best on your recovery and being able to put those pills aside for good.

It's just they way it is. Opioid receptors do different things when excited by slightly differently shaped molecules, and that can vary quite a lot from person to person.
Kratom is one of the more interesting medications that way. Most of the benefits of opioids, but without the pesky problem of making you fail to breathe. It acts on the same receptors.

I have found that the insomnia and nightmares are lessened if I time taking those type of meds (when I need them) so that I'm about halfway to the next dose by the time I should be falling into REM sleep. Like you I try to avoid use during the day if possible, and by having it beginning to wear off while I'm in a deep sleep the side effects tend to be not nearly as bad for me. Keep in mind that I'm not you, and I tend to stil be rummy for several hours (sometimes half a day) after I would be due for the next dose.

Lol, I''ve just been through that 5 weeks ago, 4 days in induced coma and 10 in Intensive care, telling people about stuff that wasn't even real, my strategy with the pain meds (oxy)once I was home was to cut them out during the day and only take them about 30-60 minutes before bed, once the pain got the point I could manage it I cut them out before bed as well, first few nights were a little uncomfortable until I adjusted but I sleep right through now

I found oxy had little effect on the main pain sources but cleaned up all the little peripheral pain and relaxed me a bit more, it worked better when in combination with paracetamol, Ibuprofen and Gabapentin that they gave me

How do the disability payments work? here we have Accident compensation where we get paid 80% of our previous 12 months wages by the Goverment, this is for any accident even just tripping over and breaking something and a public health system where all the treatment (and my Helicopter ride) are free of charge

Good luck with the recovery Matti I hope you get back to 100%
