Difference Between 1983 and 1984 Maxim?

    Hi all,
    I just purchased a 1984 XJ750 Maxim a few months back and have been loving it! I've already done some minor repairs and updates, but feel that it might be smart to get some extra parts just incase things break. I found a bike that someone is selling for parts only, but it is a 1983 XJ750. My biggest question is what are the main differences between the 83' and 84' models? If the price is right, should I get it or just get parts as I go?

    If it truly is a 1984 MAXIM (and not a 1984 Seca 750 model), then the 1983 and 1984 Maxim model parts are identical (the '84's were just left-over 1983 models).

    Thanks for the reply. It's definitely a MAXIM, as I almost got a SECA instead - very different as you know. It is a pain though, because when I am searching for parts online I can never find a 1984 750 Maxim. It's always a 83' 750 or a 84' 650. Glad to know they are the same in 83-84! Thanks!

    Be aware though, some Maxims had the the early version of the XV?? 'square' Atari, mine, which was an imported (to the UK) '82 had the more basic analogue gauge cluster.....

    EDIT NOT square but subtly different from the XJ750 Seca Atari, whilst performing much the same computer controlled functions !!!

    Im in Lethbridge, AB, not too far from you! Is the k version the same as the X? I’m a noob so I thought the Maxims were X models. Am I wrong?

    Maxim X's use the early version of the FZ watercooled 750 or 700cc engine, most ordinary Maxim 650 and 750 motors are all but identical to the regular XJ650/750 Seca except they were rubber mounted in the frame.......but completely interchangeable, with a little work

    I’m not sure what you mean by the Atari or the XV (I’m a noob). The instrument cluster? I took a pic of mine.... does this seem like a Maxim to you? Everything else points to it as well.

    Its a Maxim, same gauge cluster as my 82 Maxim, I have seen SOME with a funky looking, angular 'Atari' computer monitor system gauge cluster, , much like the XJ 750 Seca models.....hang on I'll try to find a pic

    I'm sure SOMEONE on here, has a pic of one, basically they came with the gauges YOU have, and also a much more 'Buck Rogers' looking version, very similar to the XJ750 Atari gauge cluster!!

    1982 XJ750 Maxim (1982 only) used a rectangular "computer" style dashboard, which is very similar to but different than the 1981-83 XJ750 Seca (and all XJ750 Euro models) dash. Some of the computer and monitor display parts are interchangeable between these clusters, but most of the actual gauges, housings, mounting structures, etc. are not. They look the same "at a glance" but are visibly different when observed side-by-side.

    1983-84 XJ750 Maxim models used round, analog gauges, identical in appearance to the XJ550 Maxim and XJ650 Maxim models. Besides the change from mechanically-driven tachometers (all XJ550 models, and 1980-81 XJ650 Maxim models) to electrically-driven tachos (1982-84 XJ650 Maxim and 1983-84 XJ750 Maxim models), these clusters are identical in every way to each other.

    Mine MUST have been an '83 then, lol......so long ago, can't remember!!! ( bought it 'new' in the crate, in 1991)

    That cluster is a Euro (not Uk) model. Mine is kmh only (no miles), some japanese text and an extra red light in the bottom left of the rev counter.

    I know, mine was a US model, in MPH.....much like the UK.....could it be Japanese home market, did they get the Maxim??.....maybe Canadian, since the Op is in Canada..??

    Mine is japanese home market, hence the japanese script. Still need to work out what the red light in the revcounter is.

    Red light was common on a lot of Jap imports probably a 'speed warning light'.........
