Good evening fellow XJ'ers. I have finally gotten my 1980 650 all ready to go for a ride and tada issue. Needless to say after an hour of investigating i have found the issue.

One of the 4 gold colored bolts that couple the yoke to the drive output of the motor has come out and slid down the drive tube into the rear section. If I roll the wheel backwards i can hear it rattle around in there. If I roll the wheel forward it jams instantly, as expected......My first though is center stand and drop the swing arm out of the pivot point and remove the other 3 gold bolts and try to shake out the loose bolt? Thoughts? Thanks be to the xj gods i was not doing 60kms/hr when it happened...I can only imagine the grenade that would have gone off:)

Holy crap i got it. Took off rear wheel and shocks lift back of swing arm and a few shots of air i was able to grab it with my magnet.

Wow....now I just have to convince my wife I can do my own maintenance again....:)

Any tips on how to get those 4 bolts torqued??

    Cheers

Easy, tell her no one else in town can provide the love and attention to detail than yourself. And then mumble stuff about safety and how you and only YOU can guarantee safety and reliability.

I am not sure of the yolk and fasteners (screw-in/ nut on back/ etc.) that you speak of.
I would be concerned about how one bolt walked out all the way. You should try to get her torn down to where you can inspect threads. Verify torque value in manual, new fasteners and perhaps some blue loctite.

Ya....I guess i will have to torque and loctite into place. To be honest I dont think I did a proper torque on reassemble. All 4 were loose. Checked my notes and sure enough it has a note to lookup torque spec....lol

In the Haynes Manual page 170 bolt #44 is the one I speak of. Any idea what the torque spec wold be on it? Blue Loctite? The manual never refers to the bolt.

    Some pics to help understand...

    +1 on the last post.
Yes on medium strength thread locking compound. Those are not fasteners that you want to have walk out on you.
