How could I go about bypassing my clutch sensor on my 82 XJ550 Maxim?

if it is broken just cut the wires. with wires cut bike will only start in neutral. you can then twist wires together and bike will start in gear, this can be hazardous.

or you open up the headlight bucket and there will be a green connector disconnect it . same results as above and if you put a jumper across the pins bike will start in gear.

if you have a spare brake light switch it will work as a clutch switch when the correct connector is added/spliced in.

our supporting vendor sells the clutch switch.

why do you think yours is bad?

Thought it was the solenoid, so I replaced that. Battery has full charge, replaced the starter button and I know it works because I tested to see if it delivers power to the starter and solenoid, and it does. But when I swapped my bars I think the clutch sensor might have broke inside the perch because it’s really loose and that’s the only thing I can think of for it not starting

not starting or not turning over?

are the new bars painted? starter button grounds through the control body to bars to frame. you can add a ground wire to the control connector.

try pulling the side stand relay under the seat .

if your clutch switch is bad bike would start in neutral.

clutch sensor prevents you from starting bike in gear with out clutch pulled in .

I sanded a little paint off the bars where they touch the start button housing but I never sanded where they clamp to the triple tree. That could be my issue possibly?

Diagnosis would go much more smoothly if you could keep everything about your machine in one thread.

yes that would be the issue. instead of sanding the bars go to the connector that comes from the control, it is located under the tank aside of the right ignition coil.
you will see a black wire coming from control into the connector the wire has no wire to connect to in the mating connector . cut the wire splice a wire and solder it to about 6 inches of wire with a ring terminal and connect the ring terminal to the mounting bolt for the ignition coil. this will give you a ground with out having to grind sand any paint

Sanded the bars where the starter button housing goes completely as well as the part that touches the bar clamp. Not even a click when I hit the button. I’m at a complete loss with this thing. I’ve tested every electrical component of this bike and there’s absolutely no reason that it shouldn’t start up. No idea what to do next to try to get it to start.

I sanded every bit of paint off the part of the bars that are covered by the right side controls and the throttle tube. I also sanded the bars where it touches the top of the triple tree clamp and it still doesn’t work. Do I need to sand off paint under the bars where it touches the part of the clamp that’s connected to the triple tree as well?

You should have ground at this point.
I would check all the connectors, if they were disconnected you could have a poor connection somewhere.
Clean with electrical cleaner and apply dielectric gel.

    set meter to continuity test
1 pull the connector from the solenoid hook your meter probe to negitive on battery, hook other probe to blue white wire at connector.
press starter button , do you get a squeel from the meter?
2 if no find the black connector by the right ignition coil this is the connector that the right controller hooks to , hook meter probe to black wire in the connector.
    do you hear the squeel?

3if yes disconnect connector and hook probe to black wire and blue / white wire .
press starter button, do you hear the squeel?

if not then your starter button has a problem check control look at connection for blue/white wire and black wire

if you answered yes to test 1
    set meter to volts
hook meter to battery ground (neg terminal) hook other probe to red white wire of the solenoid connector . key onn run/kill switch to run (middle)
you should get a 12 volt reading

if you answered yes to test 2 your ground through handle bars is good if no check black wire into control or where you took paint off at control.

the easiest fix to the painted handle bars is to hook a extention wire to the black wire and a ring terminal and hook it to the ignition coil mounting bolt.

paint has a thickness to it you may not be making the connection from control body to bars unless you sanded over 180 degrees around bars. this would allow controller to connect to bars
