Swapped the bars on my 82 XJ550 Maxim, with painted drag bars. As soon as I put everything back together I pressed the start button and nothing happened. After some research and help on here I thought it was a ground issue. Sanded off paint under the starter button housing and still nothing, not even a click from the starter. I replaced the solenoid, still nothing. Thought it might be the button itself, so I replaced it with an Emgo starter button. Tested everything with a multimeter and the button delivers voltage to the solenoid and the starter gets voltage as well. For some reason the bike doesn’t even click when the button is pressed even though the multimeter tested everything and it should work. Maybe there’s an issue before the solenoid making it not switch? Hopefully someone else has had this problem and can help. This bike is super clean and has always ran perfectly, this issue is something I just can’t figure out.

have you sanded off the paint where the bars clamp onto the fork clamps , or you could run a separate earth wire from the start button to ground on the frame

I sanded the top of the bars where the detachable bar clamp pieces touch them. Gonna try taking them off and sanding off paint on the bottom where they touch the clamp that’s connected to the frame. Hopefully that yields results.

Otherwise a simple jumper wire hooked to a good ground connection to the switch housing should tell you right away if it's a ground problem or something else. Solenoid, etc

There’s absolutely no paint under the throttle/button housing and where the bars clamp to the triple tree. Probably not a ground issue, all fuses are good, no bad connections, all electronics test okay and power is being delivered to its proper places yet not even a click. Very confused

Tried all sorts of combinations of having the clutch pulled, kickstand up, neutral, gear, etc. still nothing

if your getting voltage to the starter wire side of solenoid when you press the button it is likely your starter.

if you follow the black wire from starter button back to the harness connector you can cut the wire add a short piece of wire and ground the wire to the coil mounting bolt

this will insure that your button has a solid ground point.

Starting to get it narrowed down! I originally thought the issue was in the right hand control housing so I ditched the original and installed and Emgo control button and wired it in correctly since power is delivered to all components when tested with a multimeter. A few days ago, I took apart the button housing and noticed the solder joint above the start button, I touched it with a screwdriver and bridged it to my bars and it started to turn over! So now I know my issue lies within the control housing. I thought maybe the button wasn’t making contact when pushed but it is. It should be grounded with the paint sanded off and the wire installed like you explained. Any ideas?

re solder the joint the solder joint can degrade over time

if you pull the connector off the solenoid hook your meter to the blue wire and to the ground wire you installed you can test the circuit . an ohms test or a continuity test see if it jumps around with button depresses check the connection of the blue wire at the connector up near the ignition coils where the control connector mates. the pins in the mating connectors could have a bad connection at the connector. It could be a bad connection at the solenoid connector.
could be a cold corroded solder joint at starter button
