    Hi
Is there any way to find out if parts are interchangeable ? i have an 1985 Maxim x but most adverts for parts are for earlier models.
    Any help appreciated.
    Thanks
    Paul

use a site like www.partzilla.com when you click on the part number it will show what other bikes use that item.
for the 750X you will need an online source from Canada

Almost everything on a 750-X is the same as on XJ700-X model......every last nut, bolt, screw, washer, thing-a-ma-jig and what-not, except for some of the internal engine parts (cranks, rods, pistons, and cylinders are unique, due to the longer stroke of the 750 engine). And besides engines and associated water-cooling system components (and some of the suspension pieces), both the XJ700 air-cooled and XJ700-X water-cooled (X) models are basically the same.

Now, the regular air-cooled XJ750 models...........well, there may be a couple of minor mechanical parts that are the same, and a few fasteners here-and-there that are the same, but otherwise............XJ700/XJ750-X and air-cooled XJ750 models are completely different bikes. Let's see.....rear brake shoes are the same. Rear brake and turn signal bulbs are the same (but the fronts are different). The little rubber grommets that holds the side covers on are the same (some of them are, others are different). Etc.

You forgot the most important difference Len, the 750X TCI allows redline at 11.
This is a real 11 and not a Spinal Tap 11, LOL.

Does the 750-X really use an 11K redline? The 700-X has a 10K redline, odd that a longer stroke motor would use a higher redline.........

Keep in mind the 750 was the bike Yamaha planned for the market.
The 700 was a knee jerk reaction to fit under the Reagan era tariff and really a modified 750 to work the rules.
The external dimensions of the motors are the same however the stroke is different.
If the same 750 pistons were used in the 700 they wouldn't go all the way to the top.
Yamaha made a shorter stroke crank and a taller piston for the 700 to compensate, unfortunately this piston is heavier.
That is the reason the redline was reduced.
We need a pic of the 750-X tachometer face.

I just read the FZ750 has a redline set at 11,000 with the rev limiter cutting in at 11,800 rpm.
I suspect the XJ750-X electronics cut in at the same limit.
