Hello im Robin from the Netherlands and im new here.

I did a conversion of my diversion into a naked, everything is running smoothly just waiting for a few items and then the project is finished, only one thing I tried to find it here in the forum but I can't find the solution.
also the speedometer isn't working fine but I think that's because its cheap shit that's why I ordered normal gauges now and hope that one is working better.

I can't get my aftermarket tachometer working, ive got the universal cheap ones with the following cable colors:

    RED-backlight
    BLACK-backlight
    (this I got working)

    Green- Negative ground
    black-positive
    black/yellow- engine signal(high voltage)

I tried almost everything with the black/yellow cable, on the ignition coils(orange and if I remember correctly the grey one, on the original cable(grey), on the sparkplug, on the sparkplug cable. but I didn't get my tach working.

I was hoping I would find my solution here.

    Thnx for reading.

    (also uploaded the bikepic)

    Cheers

I think you need to post some pictures of the tach.

here the pictures, also the speedometer doesn't start at 0, but minus 20, so a new set is on the way, but also ordered a different set, but I think it's not important which tachometer it is, but how to connect the wires, because they are all universal products

I'm not sure why they're saying (high voltage). High voltage for the ignition system would be several thousand volts.

Looks the same as this one: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Motorcycle...757085?hash=item4b7011b9dd:g:FFYAAOSwp2Vd6J1s

Which the seller says is not compatible with any Yamaha except Virago models. However, my XV750 uses TCI, too... so it really should work with an XJ if it works with an XV.

Yes, from your and his information: short black to switched 12V. Short green to chassis. And short yellow/black should be able to go to either grey or orange in the harness.

I tried again and still not working properly, I did the positive and negative with the new one, and the signal wire I connected to the sparkplugcable( 1o times wiring around the cable), this gave a little life in the tach but not enoug, does anyone has any ideas for me how to fix this, im 2 weeks working on this problem and still not working! already tried to connect the yellow black wire in the harness--> also not working. should it be connected to the cdi or something? also tried to connect to red/white wire from the coils-->no success, also tried the grey and orange wire in de harness-->no success...

so what can I try more (the backlights I got working and the speedometer now is on "zero" instead of minus 20.

    thnx for reading

Normally electronic tachs get their signal from the coil drive, not from induction from the high tension wire.

Have you tried wiring it that way - with the signal wire connected to the orange or grey wire that drives one of the coils?

I think I do, i connected the wire to the metal off the coil(orange and the grey) or should i connect the wire to the wire itself?

    thnx

To the wire itself. Either the orange or the grey.

Do you have the same bike - 1995 XJ600 Diversion?

If so, XJRider has a nice schematic and you can see the White / Green wire attached to the pick-up and to the Igniter Unit - I don't know the bike all that well but I would suspect if you wanted to tap into that wire with an aftermarket tachometer you would do it at the TCI.

The Ignitor Unit also appears to have a dedicated wire for the tachometer that appears to be a Yellow / Black wire. I would try that wire first as it is already routed to the instrument cluster.

And, we don't know which tach you are trying to install, some are designed to monitor the input for a zero crossing signal (Pickup) and some are designed to detect a differential input change of polarity (coil primary).
