So I bought a very used XJ650 and the rear blinkers just stay on. They are not stock. When measuring the voltage to them its a constant 12v.

Front blinkers don't do anything no matter if I hold the left blink switch or right. Nothing.

Is a constant 12v to the rear blinkers normal??

I appreciate the help, thank you!

not stock. are they on when blinker switch is not to left or right?
and both on at same time?
could be hooked to wrong connectors.
650 rear blinkers.PNG should be hooked to a Dg dark green connector and a Ch chocklet connector and black for ground same thing for front

I'll take a video of wiring in a second, both are on at all times. Pressing the brake does nothing, the brake light works.

If nothing happens when you hit the brakes, how do you know the brake light works?

If one doesn't light (front or rear) neither will blink. You need to have both lighting up to pull enough current to run the flasher circuit. So, you need to find out why the front ones aren't lighting.

Sorry, I misunderstood. Both are on at all times sounds like you maybe wired them in with the tail light and now you have running lights. Are the bulbs double-filament types?

I can confirm that without using the switch, both rear blinkers are on. I even tried Uninstalling the front blinker and using it as a rear blinker and it didn't work.

Just now looking at this diagram, how do my blinkers work when they only have 1 wire going to them?? Front and bank??

With the early 650s and with the blinkers that you are using the blinker housing is grounding to the frame and you are only supplying hot to the blinker that is how Yamaha did it for the 1980 models and some of the 1981.
Clean off the wires look for a dark green wire and a chocolate wire chocolate is dark brown those are the two wires that run the rear bulbs with your left and right side.

In order for the bulbs to flash you have to have the front and the back bulbs hooked up. both bulbs are required to reach a certain resistance level /wattage level to make the flasher operate. You may want to check the bulbs they need to be 27 watts each and would be the 1157 or 1156 bulbs single filament not sure of the number off the top of my head.

The tail light bulbs are dual filament and are always on to the running light in the brake light housing.

With the front blinkers you will find the same color in the headlight bucket dark green and chocolate. There are also some wires in there for running lights that just keep the lights on permanently I think they're more of a lighter brown.

when you grab the throttle and turn on the lights I don't see what you're doing in the video. Are you squeezing the brake lever or just twisting the throttle sometimes low output voltage keeps the directionals from working that's why I asked.

Fire the bike up and keep the rpms a bit above warm idle speed. What happens then?

I hadn’t realized you didn’t have the bike running.

but your switch seems wonky too

ok inside the control you will find a little baord with 3 wires soldered to it . a wire may be loose very common problem . with a pinpoint solder Iron and thin solder resolder the 3 wires. that will fix the issue of when you pull on the harness and the light goes out.
when you have control apart clean contacts use an eraser and some contact cleaner spray and then lube with a little silicon grease (dielectric grease) aka bulb grease.

simple job. tin tip of iron with a little solder and heat untill you see the solder melt let cool then do next wire if needed. Yamaha did a poor job on soldering the 3 wires.

if the wrong blinker in the back is flashing just switch the wires back there. or which ever set of wires to make the lights work in the direction of the switch.

FYI switch shuts off when pressed stright in on 550 and 650

    your getting closer

for yamaha it is the 1156 bulb single filiment 27 watts

dont know what goes into those back blinklers

3 for 3 and all were cold solder joints from factory.
