Hey all. I am going to do another oil change. Last time I put in bel-ray synthetic oil. I have about a quart of it left (I believe it takes 3.5 quarts?) Anyways, was thinking of going cheaper and getting regular oil. Can I mix the two together? Is it safe to switch from synthetic back to regular? Yes, changing my oil filter too. Thanks!

No problems mixing oils, but make sure that you buying an oil suitable for our wet clutches, I believe JASO certified
Rotella T4 is a good conventional oil that lots of people use

Thanks. Reading the forums and seems there is a varying degree of disagreement on the amount of oil. I believe the manual says 3.5 but I am seeing 2.8 quarts?

The numbers vary probably because of changing the oil filter vs not.
Fill so the smallest of bubbles is visible in the sight glass

I can't find the oil/temp chart for our bikes, but I think that Moncton wouldn't get warm enough for 20W50

Can you all confirm this is the right stuff? I just don't see a pic of a bike on it and want to make sure. I'm such a newb!

if you look on the jug you will see it says Jaso MA/MA2 someplace. Thats what you need to see on the oil can. if there was a motorcycle photo it would add 10$ to the cost;)

Yamaha says 20W40. There is no such thing anymore; I ran Castrol Semi-synthetic ACT>evo 20W40 motorcycle oil in my '83 550 until it was no longer available. So I'm using Castrol Semi Synthetic ACT>evo 20W50 now; the bike is fine. The biggest improvement I noticed with the semi-synth is virtually zero oil consumption. With conventional dinosaur juice, the motor used a small but what I would consider normal amount of oil especially if running at high RPM for extended periods. Not so with the semi-synthetic. Clutch is fine, motor is happy so I am too.

One of the great advances in the past 6 or so years has been synthetics that have been formulated to play nice with wet clutches.

Long before that, I was using synthetics 20 years ago that were for wet clutchs

That was not an option in the U.S. for whatever reason.

Probably the same reasons they still use MPH instead of real measurements :p

Been using Rotella T4 and before that it was Rotella T in every bike for many years. In Canada at Wally mart it usually goes on sale late summer/autumn...just bought some $26 for 9.5L.

A friend from Pennsylvania came to see us last summer...he had never been out of the US. After crossing the border, he was overjoyed when he seen a gas sign $1.05...he was not so happy after he filled up.

He probably had even more fun with those posted speed limits of 100!
